BEST key blanks???

There is one keyblank that you can't be caught with, its the keys for mailbox lock, as you see in the post office, they look like a yale only they are opposed, I don't remember the name of them off the top of my head.

999R is a reverse Y-1, but it is only available in 5 pin configuration. PO Boxes are 6 pin locks. The post office will provide you with extra keys for $1.00 each, so it's more economical to get them from the Govt. than to cut them yourself, legality aside.

FM is the master keyway for A-R. If you can get your hands on one of those and it slides in, you know it should be available from most any locksmith.

Um, no it isn't. FM is sketchy at best and quality control is inadequate even with top brand like Ilco. Best offers such multiplex blanks and if you're going to use the FM, OEM is the only way to go.

It's supposed to fit A,D,E,F and G. It does not fit B,C and H & above. The thing is that, Best knows exactly what machining tolerances are for their cylinders, so they can make it properly. Third parties, not so. I've got some Star brand that do not fit F keyways.

Well said! Your case in point regarding OEM (original equipment manufacturers) keys is well taken, for Master, Schlage, and most of all for BEST.

Best blanks are not patented according to my understanding. We are not under contract with Best and yet we possess a load of different blanks A-R, and then some.

I am needing some help identifying a Key and locating a blank.

The key says Kaba Peaks and has a series of numbers on the front and back of the key.
The numbers on the front say A03 L28 and those look laser engraved the ones on the back look stamped on and don't look original SLP 01.

I have done some research on this key and it is a Kaba Peaks Classic key.
This was a patented key, but the utility patent expired June 2010.

I have searched online to see if I can find a blank, but I have not had any luck.
When doing my searches I kept coming accross the brand BEST.

Does anyone know of any key blanks that will work for my key?

I can send photos of the key if that would help.

Stop trying to copy college/university/commercial keys you legally don't own. You also may want to read the paperwork you signed when the key was handed to you to use.

I am a professional engineer who graduated from college almost 10 yrs ago.

I have the key and pad lock in my possession and I didn't sign any paperwork except a bill of sale.

So why don't you quit being a smart As and give me a real answer.

If the answer is buy a new pad lock then that is what it is.

Since you still have the bill of sale you already know who you can obtain additional copies of the keys from... No dealer of the Kaba/BEST Peaks products will sell you an additional copy of another dealer's cut keys (this is what that laser engraved number 'A03 L28' is, it identifies the dealer who cut and sold the key) because even though the blanks are no longer under patent protection, the dealers who have access to them who can cut such keys are still under contract to follow the agreements they made in order to be able to sell the locks and keys in the first place... Just because the patent has expired doesn't mean the contracts which limit distribution of the materials become null and void...

"SLP 01" is an internal code by the locksmith to identify the key so that they could cut you another one if you lost your keys...

Nothing is forcing you from continuing to use your Peaks cores and keys, if you want to swap them out with something you can copy without restrictions there are hundreds of options open to you... But something tells me that is why you opted for the Peaks cores and keys in the first place when they were installed...

You can't find "Kaba Peaks" brand key blanks anymore because BEST Access Systems has purchased the rights to sell the the Peaks product from Kaba-Ilco...

Yeah I have already tried to contact the guy that I bought my trailer (Pad Lock & 1 Key included) from and he has since passed away. This was about 2 yrs ago I purchased the trailer, but only recenlty had a scare on losing my key. If I would have known how much trouble this was I would have asked for more info on the lock & key then I did on the trailer.

I think I might just have to give up on having a spare key, but I do like the idea of keeping this pad lock and key because of the security. If it is so tough for me to get a key and I own it then good luck to someone else.

If (and sadly this is a big if) the keyway itself was not restricted, you could possibly find a locksmith who would be willing to repin the lock for you, and cut you some new keys. I've done this before with semi restricted keyways and locks.

If you are still worried about the lack of a second key, and want something high security, you could post a "wanted ad" on the lp101 Buy sell trade sub forum, requesting a high security SFIC core with (at least) two keys. Off the top of my head I am thinking this may be easier for you (and cheaper) to source a Medeco core, or if you are willing to spend some more moolah, a bilock core, heck, pretty much every high security lock manufacturer makes a SFIC lock. Also a medeco or bilock would afford you much greater "anti-pick" protection, compared to your current keyway.

Also, you mention this is securing a trailer. Dependent on the contents, and the "risk" of break in you perceive, you may want to look at purchasing a complete (higher) security lock- as that American Lock body you have can be compromised rather easily.

(nice lock thou you got there, that keyway looks like it'd be fun to try to pick...)

Dude... Where did you buy the trailer or whatever the lock is attached to from ?

Go to that area, look for and ask the local locksmith who sold the key, they should refer you to who you need to do business with to obtain another one...

Have the key in your hand when you call. They will GLADLY tell you the nearest locksmith that carries/ services that particular keyway

I would start with a new padlock, personally. That lock body is an American 5200 series (or close variant). The core may be a very high quality core but since the lock isn't a shrouded lock, it can be easily defeated with a bolt cutter. The shackle is the achilles heel of an otherwise outstanding lock. Like locking the door on a car and leaving the window down. The American 5200 has been used since the US govt since the 60s because it's an outstanding lock that is one of the more challenging to pick. They make a variant body for that American that is shrouded so you can't cut the shackle. Otherwise, i'd call it a waste of time and resources on a lock that is so easily defeatable.
