You won't need a new cylinder. You need me to sell you a key for it, and then you take that key and have your local medeco locksmith repin the cylinder so the key works. Don't ask me to pick it, I just got done with Unlisted's and it was a pain in the butt.

PM me and I'll send you a link where you could buy a non military commercial medeco cylinder with keys to that lock for around $60.

nice lock btw, I love S&G padlocks!

I had one of those marked "US" with two keys and the control key, NIB. They sell new for around $500-600. There is no problem using a medeco AIR cylinder in them, or even a modified schlage if you want to key it into an existing system. The problem I had was that the shackle was so huge and odd shaped that I couldn't use it for anything at all. Last week I gave it to a friend who is studying locksmithing and he was really pleased.

wait, I like your other posts and know you know your stuff, but I have to disagree on the AIR cylinder, the back of the plug is not milled properly to fit into the cam/bolt unless you heavily modify a plug that is already "close enough" or you tap the cam/bolt and permanently attach the cam/bolt to the back of the medeco cylinder. The other thing I don't think is accurate is the price tag.. an S&G 831B just sold for $114 on ebay, and yes there is a guy TRYING to sell one new in box for like $500 but so far nobody has been that foolish. An 833 just sold for that much, but we all know those are newer, fancier and rare compared to the 3 to 5 831Bs on ebay every month.

A few months ago I sold my new in box 831BM1 for something like $300 and that was pretty much what the market could bare. I know to some people having a box, paperwork, baggie, and an unscratched padlock adds to the value, for me the cheapest 831 I ever got was $9.00 with 1 key, and the key was stuck and would not turn, but enough WD40 and other chemicals helped it out. I threw in a new cylinder and keys I bought for $20 from a nice lady who had about 15 new mil cylinders and I had a fully working 831.

hope you dont mind my post, I very much respect your other posts since you joined the forum, but I just deal with these locks more than most folks, so I've been following prices and trends for a couple years now.

You are right about eBay prices, they are low now on just about everything. If you look up the NSN (National Stock Number--formerly FSN, Federal Stock Number) you will see just how much Uncle paid for these locks. Additionally, a civilian version was made for a while that did not have the US Markings, and I recall it was over $500.00 back then.

As for the eBay prices, I am enjoying stocking my supplies and locksmith tools for pennies on the dollar. New American padlocks for $2.00 each in the box, a LAB Annex new for $77.00, new Best IC cores, 7 pin for $2.00 etc.

I do recall changing one of these padlocks to an air cylinder back in the 80's, it wasn't than hard then and required a minimum of machining.

BTW, thanks for the compliment about the posts, I might add that your posts are also informative and I feel we need more involved and educated members like yourself. Keep up the good work.

I'll try to post a few pictures of the lock I just gave away on this forum in the near future

831B/831B-M-1 was 5340-01-188-1560

833C is/was 5340-01-217-5068 and has been changed to 5340-01-510-2351

951 took the 833C NSN of 5340-01-217-5068
