Where to go from here?

Postby Josh K » 28 Mar 2010 19:13

Master locks -> Practice cylinder -> Medeco Biaxial -> Schlage -> Schlage Everest -> ?

What's next? I feel like I've beaten everything I can reasonably get my hands on. Haven't tried an Abus padlock, but from what I've seen that's just some spool pins. Nothing amazing. Trying to get my hands on an Assa Twin / Desmo, but that might take a while. I've looked at some lever locks but you need a decent set of wires for that. I don't have tons of money to be throwing at this that I haven't thrown already.

Anyone have suggestions? I have some stuff I can trade if you have some locks I might be interested in. :)

I have a Mul-T-Lock classic and I'm waiting on some dimple picks for it.

I haven't gotten a Primus yet. I'm watching eBay though. I'd like one with a key so I can gut it and start adding sidebar pins one at a time (same as I did for the Biaxial).

What's special about the Brinks or Disk Brinks?

BEST cylinders I'd try if I had some, but I'm not crazy about SFIC locks. Last one I took apart I couldn't get back together.

Ultra light tension, and don't turn the plug too far when you do pick it.

For Josh, I'd suggest Primus and ASSA Twin if you can handle a Biaxial. Or move into something entirely different, like lever locks.

IDK about the more advanced locks that were mentioned, but I found this post when doing a search for the Brinks Series 527. I just popped my 527 not too long ago. I doubt that those other locks would be this easy. As for the disk Brinks lock, I'm not sure that you are referring to locks similar to the Brinks R70. If this is the case, you would find it really too easy. I originally had problems with the R70, but then I found out that I just wasn't turning the plug HARD enough. Ordinarily, they say to use light tension on a lock with security pins (spools in the R70), but it has a wicked spring in the back of the plug, so you have to push pretty hard to turn it. I found this out from looking on here and actually using the key to pop the lock. Once I found out that you have to use a lot of force to counteract the spring, it took like 30 seconds for me to pick it.
On that note, I'm not sure where you should go from here, but I could pretty much guarantee that going with a 527 or disk lock might be a bit boring for you and might seem like a waste of time. I know that when I buy a new lock that might be tough, if I pop it right away, I feel gypped. Thankfully, I'm still at the point where I could be challenged by some common locks at times. Sorry, I don't have any suggestions, but I am just trying to warn that these aren't tough locks, unless you guys know something I don't about these.
