Affordable non-pick proof padlock?

Postby Antique key maker » 18 Apr 2010 10:22

Since I've been into picking certain people that I live may now know how. I want to lock a file cabinet in my house with a lock that can't be picked, bypassed, etc. Yes I do know that someone can smash it off etc., but I am not worried about that.

Can someone recommend me an affordable pad-lock, that siply can not be manipulated and opened? Is the best option something like this? Please recommend a lock, thanks.

Yes that is why the government uses that exact model .. almost impossible to open without leaving evidence.

Ths S&G 8088 - as linked by you for $9 shipped. Better yet, make an offer of $7.50 or so and buy a three.

It's a great price and they are great locks.

Personally, I prefer the "bling bling" model: http://cgi.ebay.com/Sargent-and-Greenle ... 335c30dcb7

I also see that seller has raised the price drastically since I purchased mine.. I'm pretty confident you can make an offer around the 12.00 mark if your buying more than one.. ;)

Is there a physical (size) difference between the two models (8077 and 8088)?

Bling bling model is a tad larger, as its a external housing that goes over the one w/o the bling (more or less)

Do those locks require a change key to operate?

They only require the change key to change the combination, normal every day use does not require the change key, so when you buy it, ask the guy to set a combo for you. If you don't the lock will come set to 25-0 and no key will be provided to change it to what you want.

Correct. Though a change key can be found, it's often prohibitively expensive to ship. I was lucky and my local locksmith was able to order one for about $15. Still the change key cost the price of two locks.

Can someone tell me if this lock can be shimmed open, or bypassed in anyway?

No to shimming, and nothing in this world is "bypass proof"

This lock however, will offer very good protection.. as thats what it was designed for.

Yep, that'll bypass it.

This lock (8088 / 8077) was designed specifically to show any attempts to force it open and leave obvious evidence if someone has.

btw, I just got two 8088's off of ebay @$6 ea shipped (haha- beat JoshK  ). He set the combo as well. Same guy that always seems to have them, apparently he really wants to get rid of them. As of this afternoon he had over 90 left.

I don't have them yet, but he accepted my bid, PM'd me about the changed the combo, and shipped all in one afternoon. I'll let y'all know how it turns out, but seem pretty decent so far!

At that price I may pick up a few more to do cut-aways.
@unlisted, any hints?
