Lock that won't turn..

Postby bonsize » 8 Aug 2010 9:41

Hi everyone.
I am new to this site and i am really enjoying it so far :-)
I have some homemade picks (as i am waiting for my professional ones to arrive). And i am trying to pick a padlock. With every other padlock it seems that the cylinder will turn a little bit when you put in the tension wrench, but this one is different.. It wont turn a bit, and it is not possible for me to set any pins.. What am i doing wrong??? I have tried applying alot of force and feather weight for to the wrench but nothing seems to be working..

I hope someone has some advice.

Thanks in advance,

Bonsize

If it's a very old lock which had been outside for a long time, the plug could be seized up. It's common for locks to be left outdoors and out of use for a long time if the keys are lost so it's a possibility, pics of the lock would help a lot though :D

Do you have the key to it, and if so, does the key insert easily and does the lock turn smoothly and easily when using the key?

What brand of padlock is it? As Solomon said, pics would be help.

Sorry for being so unspecific. Ehm... I don't know the lock brand but it says "Supermaster" on the front. Her are some pics of it.. Sorry if they are unclear.. My camera isn't exactly 21st century..

I finally set a few pins, I simply lubricated the keyway a bit with some graphite. But most of the times it still refuses to turn the
cylinder with the tension wrench. Not as to unlock it but as to make the unalignment that causes the pins to set..

Try this:

Apply light tension and lift each pin individually. Do some of the pins feel different when you lift them? I don't know that brand of lock, it could be that it has very tight tolerances and is a bit more difficult to pick.

Anyway, post your results, that will help us help you.

Erm... no? :|

The problem with these locks isn't tight tolerances, it's exactly the opposite. I don't think it's even possible to make a decently machined pin tumbler mechanism that small... with that said, I think the main reason he is having trouble is because of the keyway. Little locks such as this one have very small keyways which make tensioning the plug awkward. Most of the time you can't get a good grip on them using TOK tension at all, so your only option is to stick a tensioner right in the keyway, thus leaving your pick virtually zero room to work.

Because of this, you can't really SPP these locks - but then who would even want to? It'd be nonsensical even if you had small enough tools, cos they'd present no challenge whatsoever. When it comes to locks like this you're better off just bypassing the locking dog, but in the rare cases that doesn't work, they're so poorly manufactured you can usually just insert a flat piece of steel such as a wiper insert or the handle of a tension wrench and jiggle them open.

Bonsize, I wouldn't feel bad about not being able to SPP one of these... just get yourself some real locks and you'll be fine! ;)

Eh, it's a theory. Worked for me in the past having a similarly described problem.
