Picked lock - door won't open?

Postby pumita » 31 Jul 2010 0:27

Hi!

I'm trying to pick a deadbolt lock

The lock is on the left side of the door. The only accessible items on the door are a doorknob and the deadbolt lock (no other locks)

Now, when I first started (assuming the deadbolt lock was locked), the keyhole was right-side up.

I managed to pick it. I turned it almost 180 degrees CLOCKWISE (keyhole upside down), and to my surprise, the door wouldn't open. So I figured maybe it was a little jammed so I pushed clockwise as hard as I could - nothing - couldn't get it passed 179 degrees.

Maybe I turned it the wrong way?

I let it go back to it's normal position (keyhole right side up), and I changed my tension wrench to counter-clockwise. I picked it again, and the lock only moved about 30 degrees.

I tried opening it and, obviously, it didn't open.

Okay, maybe I'll try the other side again?

So I picked it, for the third time, in the same direction as the first, clockwise. It went half way around again (180 degrees). I pulled and pushed on the door but it wouldn't open!!

Here's the weird thing - it's now stuck in that position. It's stuck in the upside-down position... and it's really hard to pick because gravity is pulling the little things down... So I can't get the lock back to it's normal position.

I know what you're thinking, there's obviously some sort of manual lock on the other side... Well, if there was, then I'd expect to see BONES at my feet if ever I manage to get this door open because once you're out, and the door is locked, you're out for good. There's no 2nd door or anything. Unless you like base jumping from 200 feet.

So in short, the door can only be locked from the inside. Both right-side up and upside down positions of the ONLY lock on the door don't work.

Ideas?

Thanks!

PS: For the record, this is not illegal lock picking or trespassing at all.

Are you sure that the lock is in a working condition?

If so, you probably need to turn it past 180º to open the lock in the direction you are having trouble with...

It would be helpful to know what kind of deadbolt it is you are trying to pick...

Don't pick locks that are in use...... etc!!

Sounds like the top pins are stuck in the bottom of the key way, use your pick to push the top pins up and continue to turn the plug to open the door, from what it sounds like it has been covered many times and I think there was even a bit more of a write up on it. Should come up with a search.

Thank you for the responses

Evan, the deadbolt lock is a silver Scorpion lock. Seems rather new, though it may not be in working condition.

I will try turning it past 180 degrees as soon as I am able to pick an upside down lock, thanks for the advice!

Lunch box, I will do some searching, thanks

It's possible lol

If it is, then two things:

1) Im proud of myself for picking it once
2) Its going to be freakin hard to pick it again

:P

WISH ME LUCK!!

By the way, the lock is on the left side of the door. Any idea which direction to turn it? Clockwise, right?
