Rekey a tubular lock?

Postby Shark500 » 23 Feb 2011 1:04

Haven't been on in a while. Good to see the community is still going strong.

Alright so I have a few coin op candy vending machines. They need locks for the money compartment and it's common to use tubular locks for this part as opposed to cheap wafer cam locks. I have a key I use for other machines and some tubular cam locks laying around that do not have keys. Does anyone know how to re-pin a tubular lock? Upon my cursory search I did not find any information on this matter. I have a tubular pick if activating the lock is part of the process for the locks without keys. Any tips are appreciated.

Rekeying a tubular lock is not different from rekeying a standard one. The hard part is to take it apart in a "reversible" way. Some locks have a screw which, if undone, let you separate the plug and the cylinder. Others have a retaining pin that is not removable, like some padlocks.
Once disassembled it's just a matter of matching the pins to your key.
Try to disassemble one of yours tubular locks that are lying around and you'll see yourself if this is easy to do.

Cheers :)

It looks like mine are pinned but they seem to be keyed alike so I can just get a key made based on the pick.
Thanks for the input.

Since you have a pick, many can be used to generate a key. Pick the lock and take the lock and pick to your locksmith and have him make a dup off the pick

keysman, that's the plan. Trouble is finding a shop that can do tubular keys. There is one shop but the owner isn't there on regular hours. Always a project when you have to rely on others.
