Retaining ring removal?

Postby geekyguy83 » 13 Mar 2011 21:14

Is there a tool to remove a retaining ring? I just used 2 pairs of pliers to loosen it and a nail to actually pull it off.

there are, depend on what type of retaining ring you are reffering to. there is a truarc plier for one. there is another one which is adjustable as a "spreader, or a clipper". there are many types of retaining rings. give us a pic of what retaining ring type..and maybe, we can accurately give you some good info.regards

Thanks for your reply, I don't remove the rings frequently enough to warrant buying a tool for it. I was just curious whether such a tool exists.

For a specific lock? or just in general?

Or...hold the lock in a vice, place a small screwdriver against one of the open ends of the ring and give the driver handle a fast, sharp, medium-weight thump with your hand to ease the ring off a little, then place the tip of the driver under the ring 180deg from the gap and gently lever it off. This method has a good chance of not distorting the ring, so that it can be re-used.

Cheers...

There are a few different types of clips, the most common are: E-clips, C-clips and snap rings usually with little holes or tabs on the ends. E-clips can be removed with a small standard screwdriver, snap rings require snap-ring pliers to remove them without damage and C-clips are usually pushed off by the tangs. Kwikset key gauges usually have a notch in them to push the c-clips off.

The Channellock #927 snap ring pliers are also a good, inexpensive, choice and available at Home Depot.

I definitely need to get myself a set of snap ring pliers. I've stabbed myself with a small flat blade screwdriver or bent a snap ring so it can't be used anymore way too many times.
