alright... i just popped off the back of my combo-lock (Master 904513) and snooped around inside.... it doesnt appear that there are any ridges (or gates as they are called in this thread) on the second spindle, however the last spindle (linked to the last number) definately DOES have many many dips and peaks of varing depths.

I photographed the key parts, and will make an HTML page to post. i also plan to disassemble it a little more to show all y'all what else is going on in there.

OK, thank you cameron i have found the correct tutorial on that sight, but the way its worded makes no sense to me, and it makes my brain hurt :x . Can someone read it through and tell me whats its saying to do?

Well, I don't know how else to explain it, but

-Take your lock and pack the tumblers to the right
-Continue right to a first "don't care" number... starting with 0.
-Then, go left to that number again, 0, and continue left to 2.
-Remember, we are counting by TWO's
-Then, the other direction right to 4 past that other number (6)
-And finally, back to that number again (exactly a full turn).

Did that clarify it at all?

Complete noob's observation

Postby drunix » 13 Oct 2004 22:17

A couple of things I've noticed on picking these combination locks are:

1.) While the third number itself has been shown easy to get, and useful for getting other numbers, it itself is useless, as you can try every possible last number in a matter of seconds.

2.) The Modulous method is very good for narrowing down your guessing, but there are quicker ways than trying 100 combinations.

3.) There is a unique feel to the correct sticky spot. If you start with a lot of pressure and then back down the amount of pressure, most sticky spots will slip very early, the real number will not slip, it will click hard right up to the point where it doesn't catch. I think this is because the fake sticky spots are less steap than the real one.

4.) When you hit a correct second number, and turn the oposite direction, all sticky spots have a unique feel. Both the dial and the latch feel looser and smoother. An Incorrect number will not cause the lock to feel differently. I can usually tell whether the 2nd number is correct without even trying the third.

Then again, I'm a noob at lock picking, other than showing off to friends by opening their lockers in high school... so take my observations with a grain of salt.

Is this the same technique to use on a 40 digit masterlock gymlock? Cameron said he did it on a 65 digit lock.

Did I say that? If I did, my apologies; I've only done it to regular
40-digit ones.
