Lock recommendations?

Postby Boogaloo7 » 17 May 2011 19:25

Mods feel free to move this thread if I posted in the wrong forum? I read all the descriptions and this seemed like the most logical..

Hey guys, I'm new to the forum and community but lock picking has been a hobby of mine for quite some time. I don't have any real accomplishments other then some dead bolts and drawer full of old and new master locks that I've been successful at picking..

The reason for my post is that I'm in the market for a solid lock to lock up a heavy duty 3/4"(19mm) case hardened chain I recently purchased. As near I can tell, this has severely limited my selection of locks due to the inner diameter of most shackles. I figured what better place to ask the question then a lock picking forum :)

So far I've have come up with these locks but please feel free to let me know if you think another would work better.

Sargent and Greenleaf Environmental padlock

XENA XPL69

Abloy

BTW, the purpose of this chain is to secure a motorcycle to an in ground anchor.

I tried to edit my post but I'm not sure I have the permissions?

Anyway, the main purpose of this lock is like I stated to lock up a motorcycle on my property. As I realize there is no fool proof way of stopping theft, I'm trying to slow them down as much as possible. So I'm basically thinking of a quality type of padlock that can't be bolt cut, or sledged off. Also, I'm really not sure how many motorcycle thieves are educated enough to pick a lock, but don't think I'll be needing an abloy protec.

What do you guys think?

I dont really know about the other locks, but about the Abloy;
The PL350 on ebay is not Protec, its Exec.
If key control is not an issue, I would rather go with PL350 Classic. I don´t think anyone would pick it off your bike. Exec offers a little more pick-resistance, and the keys are restricted until 2012, so its not that much better. Protec is supposed to be the hardest to pick, and keys cannot be copied for about 10 years, I think.
In general, I wonder why I see so many Protecs on ebay and other U.S. sites and stores.
Classic is cheaper, allmost as pick resistant and you can get keys for it easier than Ecex or Protec.
For example, PL350C costs 80 euro new. And I´ll cut you a key for it for 6,50 euros, when it costs around 20 euros to order (they´re allways ordered from factory) a key for Exec.
Just my 0.02 euros..

Oddly enough, I just purchased an 831b(with 2 regular keys and 1 control key) for a really great price! So I think the lock will definitely not be the weakest part of my setup :)

I was also able to pick up an s&g environmental padlock off craigslist with no key :( to pick open and have fun with!

Out of curiousity, I know the s&g environmental padlock keys are restricted, but is it possible for me to remove the current cylinder with another cylinder/key set?

Thanks in advance!!!

The S&G locks look very imposing, and regular lock picks dont work on them unless you really know how a disc detainer Abloy style mechanism works, in which case, yeah you could use a regular pick set and patiently rotate the 3 discs inside to the correct angles, but my bigger point here is that for all the big S&G railroad enviros you'll find on ebay and craigslist, there are only 10 keys and most of them are either key number 102, 103, or 107. Just the other day some guy was selling keys 102,103,105, and 107 on ebay for $25 each and I almost got all 4 just to have a very very useful keychain in case I ever ran across one of these padlocks. The ones I have are all 107's, and you can take the key cylinder out but you have to drill out a rolled pin on the lock. Some of these padlocks don't have the rolled pin, and it is said that they are not rekeyable.

look into the ABUS Rock padlock, but NOT with the SC1 or KW1 keyway. Also look into the Mul-T-Lock C13-P or C16-P padlock with shroud in the Interactive keyway.

The 831 you got is awesome for the job, the hard part is getting a chain to fit properly...

Best,

Thanks for the reply squelch, appreciate it! Since I already purchased the environment padlock, I guess it's just going to be a paper weight / practice lock.

As for the other 831, what I'm going nto try doing is welding some kind of 3/4" plate onto 1 link that will fit thru another link on the opposite end of the chain, and then drill a hole for the shackle to fit thru.

kinda like this, think it would work?

You think the 831's shackle clearance would be able to grip around something like that?

Hi, first things first, I have to do mod duties.. please resize your sig to comply with forum rules.. about 80 pixels high by 600 pixels wide max. Same goes for inline images, try not to post JPGs wider than 1024, for those folks who are running 1024x768. =)

As for 831 shackle clearance.. that padlock was never meant to be used with a chain, it went right onto a metal L bracket (NATICK hasp) with a hole in it that was mounted to a metal door, but I have used my 833 with a chain so it's possible.

Here's a photo of some common high security heavy duty padlocks side by side, so you can get a visual of what there is to work with if you choose one of these models.

If you want to see these locks in person, we are holding a locksport Open House in Boston this Saturday from 2pm-6pm at the Sprouts hackerspace, located at 339R Summer St. Somerville MA, near Davis Square.

Hope this helps,

Sorry about the sig.. And dually noted on the posting images, The google preview deceived me a bit with a smaller preview. Ok so how do I go about checking 2 things..

1. what number key this lock takes so I can have a working lock.

or

2. If it has a rolled pin or not to see if I can in fact get another cylinder key set?

I've already spent a pretty good deal of money on both these locks, and may have jumped at the 831b a bit too soon before realizing if it would work or not with my chain. If it doesn't, then im stuck with 2 locks and no way to secure the chain. Poor me :(

This pic has the rolled pin hole visible. (not my pic or hands.. god that guy has nails..)

I believe the lock has to be opened in order to unscrew the cover (Unlisted can confirm this, he has a post about them kicking around here somewhere) once you drill out the rolled pin. So bring your lock with you on Saturday and hope the hell my 107 key opens it :-) . You can also look around ebay or youtube or here for pics of the 102 key and try to make one with a piece of metal rod and a dremel or file.

but.. even if you do that, you cant get your hands on a replacement cylinder and keys unless you're really friendly with a locksmith that happens to have the parts or can call S&G and convince them to send him parts. pretty much another $100 if you can pull off the above scenario.

or just buy a new 0881 with keys online from an online locksmith shop for $140.00 here, just a heads up, there are other S&G enviros that look similar but are much smaller. (confirm dimensions before buying.) I confirmed my lock to that $140 one and mine is the same size.
