Key Blank

Postby epiphanybase » 8 Nov 2011 11:59

Hello,
I have got a key, and am trying to locate a blank for it.
It is a Sargent, 6-pin key, but the keyway is what stumped me.
most i have seen are LN or some other L series keyways.

the key in my possession has VN stamped where keyway ID is.
i have combed through the internet and this site searching for sargent VN keyway or just looking on the web at all sargent keyways.
nothing turned up for VN keyway. my understanding is that this is a master key, probably for an outdated lock-set, and i just wanted to through it out there to see if anyone else has heard of this.

my next step would be to compare the profiles, and try to find one to match closely. i could make light modifications, but i'm just stumped about this VN thing.
there is also the number 13 on the key, but it seems that could have been done after the fact.

so, anyone ever hear of a VN keyway on a sargent 6 pin key?
i could post a picture if necessary.

thanks in advance

@epiphanybase:

Yes, most people even those who work on Sargent locks have never heard of the VN keyway but it does exist...

It is the master blank for the V series keyways and is factory restricted... Meaning you have ZERO chance of obtaining an uncut VN or any V series blanks by legal means...

If you know who this key belongs to, they can order more cut keys from the Sargent factory if they are signed onto the keying systems authorization paperwork which was established when the factory restricted keying system was created...

Your key (by its keyway alone, unless the in house locksmith was insane and cut a change key on the master milled blank) is the top level master key for whatever facility it belongs to...

For reference --

Sargent's keyway families have the following structure:

Individual Keyways: _A; _B; _C; _E; _F; _G; _J; _K; _L

three (3) keyway multi-section blanks:

multi-section blank: _D (passes 3 keyways): _A; _B; _C
multi-section blank: _H (passes 3 keyways): _E; _F; _G
multi-section blank: _M (passes 3 keyways): _J; _K; _L

three (6) keyway master-milled blanks:

_DH - passes 6 keyways: _A; _B; _C; _E; _F; _G
_HM - passes 6 keyways: _E; _F; _G; _J; _K; _L
_DM - passes 6 keyways: _A; _B; _C; _J; _K; _L

all-section blank: _N (enters all 9 keyways)

Where _ is replaced with the keyway family -

unrestricted keyway families: "L"-stock "R" "H" "C"-hotel

restricted keyway families: "A" "B" "G" "K" "N" "V"

I know that this is an old thread, but if people search in Google for the "V" key way, they would find this post like I just did.

That "V" key way is RESTRICTED to the general public, unless you are the key way administrator or authorized agency or business rep, like a facility locksmith for a municipal hospital, jail, prison or a mental institution. Even some large government buildings also use this restricted key way to make getting a duplicate key, almost impossible to cut.
