Seeking help for this doorknob.

Postby treckerman » 24 Feb 2012 1:40

Hi,I just recently got into the locksmith business and have been picking locks for about a few months now. However I have just encountered a problem that I hope the experts here can guide me through.Included are pictures of the doorknob and the key.
I'm using Goso lockpick set,can anyone help to identify this doorknob and also the correct way to go about picking this lock?
Thanks for reading this and really appreciate any assistance from all.

Is that even a pin-tumbler lock? Those look like warded keys to me?

This is definitely not a pin tumbler lock, looking at the way the key is cut will tell you that. :?

Its a wafer lock. Search for "Schlage wafer lock", and you´ll find very similiar keyways.

Yes - Schlage wafer lock.

I don't think they've been made in 30 years. I don't think I've seen one in 20 years but they were once very common.

call me a curious kitty, but why do you want to pick a lock that you have both the keys and the knob for?

from a study standpoint, it'd seem you can take it apart and sus it out, and from a lockie standpoint i don't see a bucket of applications for wanting to pick what i'd expect to be used mostly as a low security bedroom/office/supply room lock instead of looking more at bypass.

Maybe I didn't make it clear, well my bad, that key in the pict don't open that knob,it just to show the type of key that are used to open that knob.Wanting to pick it and or opening the door with my right foot is totally two different things cause then it would defeat the purpose of locksmiths services. :wink:

it must be a regional thing. I've seen these locks on and off here in southeast new york. they just seem to be like a timex watch. lockpicks.com does indeed carry a tool that opens these locks. Your local library might carry the old prentice hall book, I think it might be called 'Practical Locksmithing', and that had a lot of info on these locks.

I don't have any specifics on that lock, but it looks similar to an old Schlage wafer lock.
The Schlages were built very well and I am sure there are still 1000's in daily use.
So far as security?. The wafer locking system is a binary system.( i.e. on or off )making them very easy to pick. I know there are special tools for picking them, but any common pick will work just fine.

@treckerman:

There are two or four different types of "profile wafers" which are at the very tip of the key (farthest wafers back inside the lock) you have to correctly position that profile wafer and then all you need to do is gently rake the remaining wafers while applying tension...

Those Schlage type wafer locks when at rest were not always reliant on positive locking, in fact more of the wafers than not would only "lock" when a key with an incorrect bitting was inserted and raised them out of proper position above an unbitted portion of the key...
