Squelchtone,

I was wondering if you wouldn't mind posting a pictrure or a link to the picks you use personally.
I'm mostly interested in your choice of handles.

I intended to P.M. you but thought other new guys might like the info. as well.

Thanks,
Bladen

Well, to start, thank you, I guess, since you are considering that what I use would be the best in picking, but I am far from the best picker here. I'm a good picker, but not an awesome one like Farmerfreak for instance. He's the one you should be asking, but I will tell you or try to show you what I use. I will say that the picks do not make the man, the years of experience do. I believe Farmerfreak uses 1 hook pick with a normal handle, and a wrench. Keep that in mind as you read what I'm about to lay down.

I usually practice with a Peterson rubber handled hook, and an HPC half diamond with a foam slip on handle, but I'm also just as likely to pick up an HPC hook with riveted handles, or a Southord S rake with riveted handles. I suppose I'm not a fan of thin picks, but the TOOOL/HOPE 2K6 doubles sided L rake and S rake is one of my favorite picks that I reach for, especially for Medeco locks.

You know Bogota picks by Raimundo? I have a set of those from him, and as you know there isn't much for a handle but I keep them on me at all times, and can open most locks with them easily.

When I started, my first pick set was a small pocket Southord set, and not the slim line either, the normal sized set with riveted handles. I bend or broke every pick in the case and every wrench as well because I didnt know any better and tried to brute force locks when I first started. I also picked for a year before I even found this forum on the internet. After that first pick set, I got another Southord, and then a Southord slim line. Then came a set from the HOPE conference, and then I saved up and spent $100 on a Peterson blue plastic handled set because I thought it would give me better feed back. I can't say I'm a huge fan of those plastic handles, once I got the black rubber ones I never looked back, until I bought some individual dipped handled picks from them, I didn't think I would like it, it's an interesting material and I dont mind it now, they also have a plastic dip now, and if you get the Just Five picks, ask for the foam dip in the 5 colors instead of the 1 color plum plastic dipped shiny handles.

After this I got an HPC set with the multi color anodized handles, its a little rough on the edges, and needs some sand paper, other wise the handles are very comfortable and the hook, half diamond and S rake have good geometry and good feedback. I also picked up a pocket pick set made by Majestic, this is more for historic reasons because for many years HPC, Rattan, Brockhage, and Majestic were the only choices for locksmith companies, long before Southord or Peterson came along. The Majestic handles are riveted 3 ply handles.

If I am at a locksport meeting or just messing around, I sometimes use an HPC emergency pick set, it is a pick set with no handles, full tang, and the ends of all handles have a hole, through which they put a rivet so you do not loose the picks, the whole thing fits in a pocket or glove box or tool box for emergencies, but it is not easy to hold while picking, so I used a Dremel to remove the rivet and now I have individual picks, which are strong, flexible, and comfortable to hold. Maybe not as comfortable as the others already described, but not too bad at all.

A few weeks ago another moderator here, keysman, sent me a nice gift, a brand new KLOM Navigator pick set, which at first sight on the internet I thought I would not like very much from my experience with GOSO picks. I did a 180 on my opinion of KLOM, the handles are very rubbery almost like a silcone material, they actually stick to each other in the case, which is a little annoying when getting a pick out, but it's brand new so maybe that will wear off. I also thought I would not like the boxy/square-ish corners of the pick handles, but because they are so rubbery, they are actually very comfortable to hold, and best of all, the picks are very well made and they are almost super-euro-slim-lines, very strong and many of the hooks are very slender, and are even numbered so you can tell a friend that a number #17 pick works best on a Tri-Circle padlock while a #9 pick works best on a Corbin Russwin mortise cylinder.

So now that you've read a book about this, I suppose I owe you some photographs. Hopefully you're still awake at this point, so here are some photos of what I use:

To summarize, and in order of preference:
6. Peterson blue plastic handles (not my favorite, but I like the size for my big hands, easier to hold all day than a Southord or HPC)
5. KLOM Navigator green rubber handles
4. Southord riveted handles / or the Peterson Just Picks dipped plastic, has a good feel to it.
3. HPC metal riveted handles or with the HPC foam sleeves over those riveted handles
2. Bogotas (yeah, I know not much in the handle department, but it sure is a powerful pick!)
1. Peterson black rubber handles with govt steel pick profiles

I will add that over the years I have learned that the tension wrench/turning tool you use is probably just as important as the pick profile or handle type you choose. Some of the differences in wrenches to consider are how stiff or bendy the metal is, how wide is the metal and does it have a twist i the handle or no twist and is it top of keyway or bottom of keyway or both (one on each end)

Hope this is what you were looking for, have a good weekend,

 Thanks 8)

Here is the thing. Everybody has their own preferences. That said, I'll show you what I commonly use and what I want in my picks/tension wrenches. And I have expanded my main pick selections from a single HPC hook pick over the last few years to multiple hook pick options.

It is evident to me that Squelch has had his hands on many more picks than I have. But that's most likely because I am very narrow minded when it comes to picks. For example: If a pick is designed to interact with more than one pin at a time, I'm not interested. If I have a pick that I really like to use on any given lock, and it's working well for me. I rarely consider trying a different pick, even if it's simply another hook pick from another brand.

Here is a picture of my picks in my pick case. Note: I'm not planning on discussing a lot of what is in my case here, just the stuff for standard pin tumbler locks.
Image

Let's start with tension wrenches. I have 3 tension wrenches that I use, well actually it's just 2. All three of them are HPC TR-4 tension wrenches. Two of them are unmodified (one is a backup, just in case) the other one has been ground down for small/narrow keyways. What I look for in a tension wrench is that it is not flexible at all. I hate flexible wrenches, can't stand them. I was given a Peterson "slender" prybar, and it's ok, but it has too much flex for me to consider putting it into my pick case. Petersons regular thickness prybar may be good, but I haven't tried it as I've got wrenches that I already like.

As for the actual picks. Let's start with the one on the right with the blue/black handle. It is a custom pick made by Jruther2, it's awesome. It's thin and the metal it is made out of is significantly stronger than the other picks I have used. It is currently my go to pick. The only downside that the material has is that is has some side to side flex, but the complete lack of vertical flex more than compensates for that.

Then I have what looks like four HPC hook picks. Not all of them are really HPC picks though. The one on the right is an HPC hook that has been sanded down so the tip is somewhat flat on top. The one on the left is also an HPC hook, except the tip has been sanded so it it more rounded. Those picks are HPC HPX-2 (.028 thickness). Those picks are rigid, they don't flex (vertically or horizontally). If you end up flexing them out of shape you are doing something terribly wrong. That kind of makes it sound like they would be better than the Jruther2 pick I mentioned earlier, and it might be except that the Jruther2 pick seems several times stronger than those picks.

The middle two HPC picks are really Peterson slender gov. steel picks. I didn't like the rubber handles the Peterson picks came with, so I put on handles that I like to use. :) For the thickness/thinness of these picks they are really strong. One of them is the Slender Gem, which is a very good pick to have. Especially for getting at some of those nasty combinations with a really deep cut before a really shallow cut in the back of the lock. The other one was at one time a slender hook, but I never found a use for it that another pick I had couldn't take care of. So I ground down the shaft so it wasn't so wide, which immediately helped it enter difficult keyways. But the tip was still a little too pointy for those keyways, so I ground it down so it is kind of like a cross between a half diamond and a hook. Like the gem, except shorter. That ended up replacing my Locknewbie21 hook pick for tighter keyways.

The Peterson slender Gov. steel picks have very strong vertical strength, but have a lot of horizontal flex, which at times can be annoying.

When it comes to looking for a pick/tension wrench. Here is everything in short. Rigid picks/wrenches are good, and being able to manipulate one pin at a time is good. :)

FYI, I have never sanded my picks with anything finer than 400 grit sandpaper. It's not that sanding a pick down to a mirror finish isn't cool or anything. It's just that as long as the pick is smooth and doesn't have rough edges, it works just fine.

Something's wrong with both of you guy's (guys's?) photo sets. I don't see the Bogotas anywhere.

:?: I'm confused, where's the problem :P

I know the Bogotas work well for a lot of people. They just don't mesh with my technique, or is it that I don't have the technique for them... (Not having the technique for it doesn't exactly worry me) Anyway, if one were to be in my case it would simply be dead weight.

Here it is, just a quick thing, as I'm putting my stuff together to make a post about all my things...

My homemade (or home tuned) case folded:
Image

Opened:
Image

Tryout keys, jiglers, warded picks and gas cap key (the tubular keys are 2 very small ones that I found that opened a lot of locks):
Image

Close up on the tryout keys. It's a selection of keys I got and modified over time to fit most of warded locks where the picks don't fit):
Image

Close up on the double sided tension wrench, disc detainer pick and lock lubricant:
Image

Close up on extra tips for my plug spinner (that doesn't fit in the case :P) and Southord dimple pick):
Image

Shims and scissors:
Image

Wrenches (from left to right -> wishbone tension wrench, TOK tension wrench for thin keyways where the pry bars don't fit, double sided tension wrench (very good for american padlocks), tubular tension wrench and AVA wafer locks wrench):
Image

Left to right -> Regular wrenches and TE Pry-Bars, 2hooks and a half-diamond, deforest and long hook, assorted rakes (sorry for the lightning on this pic):
Image

Pagoda picks (soon to be replaced by the real bogotas I'm already waiting for ), Ball and double ball picks, Southord dimple pick and 2 double sided picks:
Image

That's pretty much it for now
Go ahead, keep plugging away, picking on me! You will end up on bypass or with rigor mortise.
