it is not "unpickable". Then website shows that it attaches to the thumb turn assembly. It also says you can still use a normal key. It is not even actually a lock it just turns the thumb turn assembly. So you can still pick whatever cylinder is on the other side of the door.

"With Lockitron you can instantly share access with your family and friends."

Maybe other people too? I wonder how secure that thing is...

despite its definate pick-a-bility i still like it. as long as theres no security weaknesses in the connectivity it seems like it would be pretty cool. i think its great that it logs the lock usage and that it just slips over the thumbturn-nice for a renter like myself.

I forgot to mention in my other post that even though it is pickable it is still a very good idea and good design

They say it uses the same encryption that banks use. Probably pretty good encryption.

With this unit, you could replace the keyway with a plug ( no place to put a key )
or superglue all the pins in place or overstack the pins so the bottom pin is already
protruding out the top of the plug, You could make it truly un-pickable.

I didn't think of replacing the keyway with a plug that would be a good idea.

because the product operates on AA batteries, the batteries will require constant replacement, to maintain working order. Because it requires a wifi antenna, it will periodically trigger the wifi switch (which will drain the battery) and you'll be replacing batteries more often.

I strongly suggest that you maintain the mechanical key component, because that will prevent a locked out situation turning into destructive entry.

If it is pick/bump resistance concerning you, consider a more pick resistant or bump resistant cylinder like Abloy Protec or Bilock.

as is the nature of entrances, there is often weathering and door and frame movement to also take into consideration. If the door moves slightly or the bolt doesnt line up correctly, free enough movement of the bolt will not necessarily lock the bolt. The app may indicate the bolt is locked when in reality it is not.

I think it will be a phenomenal product, when it releases but you should definitely maintain a mechanical overide key for the reasons above.

Wondering how powerful the motor is. Some locks need a lot of torque to turn, even if the lock itself is ok. For example loose hinges or sealing strips which prevents the latch from moving freely.

Of course you can wire it with a car battery if you are afraid that it will drain out of power.

Anyway, very cool product with a lot of possibilities! And not only in area of opening doors. It´s like a RC servo motor controlled by your phone 8)

Although the Lockitron may use "Bank Encryption", keep in mind that the most residential applications use WPS for those devices or WPA2-PSK... or god forbid WEP... depending on your network/router/firewall... which is realistically pretty easy to circumvent. So... if someone really knows what they were doing... you are not stopping them.

This product is quite interesting and aesthetically pleasing, it functions almost like a Schlage Link.... but I really doubt it will work with mortise cylinder deadbolts, double sided deadbolts, or the LARGE ADA Thumbturns. =(.

But a cool idea and a cool looking product too. IDK about durability or security. :D
