Newbie help with master lock 1D

Postby Tim26201 » 5 Jan 2013 8:43

I'm new to the art and have been spending about 2 hours a day with practice locks that came with a youtube kit. It takes me about 15 to 30 sec. I have picked a couple no name padlocks but I master D1 has really stumped me for 3 days any help any advice would be greatly appreciated. The pins seem very rough and I can feel or hear them set but I just can't seem to get it unlocked. At one point my tension wrench slipped and I thought the lock had opened after my celebration I realized what had happen. Excuse me for going on and on. Please help

It is possible that the lock has spool pins in it, and what you are feeling is a false set. After you get all the pins to feel like they are set, try and lift up on each pin gently to see if you get any counter rotation from the cylinder.
There is a lot of information on this forum about security pins.
Hope this helps.

did you say a practice lock from a youtube kit?? yikes.. sounds chancy.. The local Ace Hardware, Walmart, Target, and Home Depot are all you should need to get as many locks as possible.

That Master padlock has 4 pins and no spool pins. try this trick if the bottom plate allows for it: counter clockwise tension wrench rotation, now try picking. For some reason sometimes Master Lock laminated padlocks often pick easier counter clockwise.

If you are totally new, more than likely you are putting too much pressure on the wrench, check out this short clip I made, it may offer some help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0x07dDVjsHM

keep practicing, and get different locks to practice on, a Defiant deadbolt for $12 at Home Depot is a great choice because you can take it apart and start with 1 pin, then 2 pins, and so on, where as you cannot take the Master Lock apart easily to see the insides.

Gave up on the master 1D and went to a smaller 141D master 2 hours and it opened. I was surprised just how much tension it took. Is it safe to assume that cheaper smaller padlocks might take a little more tension. I am thinking I had it picked a few times but just wasn't using enough pressure to actually open it.

Just looked that lock up.

It only has 4 pins and i couldn't see a mention of security pins (could be wrong).

If there aren't any, this should open in seconds with a little practice.

Keep at it with a small hook and light to medium tension and it will fire open. The keyway access is good on that lock so should give you no bother getting a pick in there.

Thank you for the words of encouragement I still haven't managed to get the 1D opened but I'm not giving up. The odd thing is I have managed to open a few other padlocks without much trouble. I'm slowing down and working on feeling everything I can and going back to a cut away lock to understand what I am feeling. Am I on the right track ? I'm interested in finding hands on instruction maybe sometime in the summer, any suggestions ? Travel isn't a problem.

This is the set he is talking about. It seems like a good set to learn on, it's what I started with. I think they mess with the tolerances on them to make them easier to pick because I got that set and without ever picking before I was able to open the 5 pin Kwikset lock in under 5 minutes with SPP. it was a good start though to not frustrate you enough to want to stop, and the Schlage locks were harder so it gave you a step up. Mine was also a lot cheaper because I didn’t get anything with it, I just got the locks and the holder.

You have a least one security pin in that lock. I get past security pins by allowing a little bit of counter rotation as I push up on them. I push up with more force than I would on a regular pin. Keep the tension on the light side. You should hear a pop sound. You may have to do this several times. You may also have to re-set other pins.

The other way to get past security pins is with a loose "sloppy" raking that will bounce the pins up past the shear line.
