looks like a Kwikset. how to remove cylinder.

I dont know what to call it. I just thought i would bring it up in case you ever come across it.



This is the second time i have run across this type of lock. The quickpull will not work. I dont know the name of it. It looks like a standard kw knob. When you remove the spindle to use the kwickset cylinder removal tool to get the cylinder out, it wont come out.
You have to remove the spindle, pick or use key to turn plug completely upside down. Then the cylinder will pull straight out.
Its similar to the titan. But you dont have to have the slit in the key. There is two wings holding it in. They will retract inward if the plug is upside down. You have to remove the spindle.
Also remember that you must return the cylinder to the knob before replacing the spindle.

That looks like a some dollar store cheapo for sure. Never seen one with clips that retract like that. How is the spindle connecting to the cylinder to unlock the knob? I don't see any recess in the plug nor anything that looks raised either.

Its hard to see in the pic. The plug is recessed at the end to fit the spindle. It actually was in a dumpy double wide i had to re-key off the fannie mae key. The lock felt solid. Heavier and sturdier than a kwickset untill i got the cylinder out. If you are not careful and pop off that wire, the clips will slide out. I had to figure out how to put them back on for it to stay in the knob.
It was a pain because i was working on it at a house. I would have enjoyed playing with it at the shop

That is a really a horrible way to retain a cylinder for sure. Inward spring pressure with clips riding on the plug will wear a grove into it eventually. Just when you think you seen it all along comes that thing.

I am in central Georgia. I have heard about them but havent seen them much. They are usual accompanied by a defiant type generic deadbolt. I wish i would have kept one of them to study up on.

All you would need to use is the end of the Kwikset cylinder removal tool to take off that C clip. Just push it off from the bottom with rocking motion just like a regular Kwikset .

Those are the cheap REO locks typically used on foreclosed properties.

You can buy them in bulk already keyed to HUD, Fannie/Freddy and other specific keys.

Usually they are around $4 each.

Easiest way I have found to rekey them is pull that spring clip off and remove the wings before removing the plug. Then reassemble after you put the plug back in place.

Normally I just throw them away, but sometimes I have to rekey them.

$3 to $5 for a knob set or deadbolt? Time to run and get a set of these obviously fine, trustworthy locks.

Yet we all know people who really do jump at the chance to do exactly that. Sorry, but I take the safety and security of my wife and son much more seriously than saving a few bucks on a lock. Some things are not replaceable, but for most of the stuff in our house, there is insurance. But my wife and son can not be substituted by an insurance company.

They are not something i would run out and buy. A real pain to take apart and rekey. It was too easy to pick. I guess there purpose is just that they were bought keyed for the fannie mae reality company to have easy access.

Whoever bought this home has a lot of work to do on the home. I hope they include replacing the locks.

If they sell new for $3 to $5 bucks how much did it cost to make them .30 cents?

These are very common around here. We find them on FM properties all the time. We do about 15-20 FM properties a week. To rekey pull the spindle just like on a Kwikset 400, then pick the lock 180 degrees, cylinder comes out, then just rekey like you would a Kwikset. They are about the same quality as a Kwikset 400 and a bit better than a Defiant, Moss or Brinks knob..
