Newb question: what are these really short pins for?

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Newb question: what are these really short pins for?

Postby PherricOxide » 4 Feb 2013 23:04

I got one of those EZ repin practice locks that you can repin without having to take it apart. It came with 6 drivers, 6 spools, bunch of key pins, and these tiny pins on the right that I've never seen before. Are these for master key pinning? Or what are they used for?

Half step pins are used for multi/master keyed systems. It's hard to tell from your picture, but I believe they get even thinner, though it could just be blurry.

Aah that's what they're called, thanks! I just needed enough to be able to search, "short lock pins" wasn't getting me far.

They aren't half-step. If anything they are 2 step as used in the majority of systems.

some brands call them master wafers, even though they are pins...

Never heard of half step pins. I have always called them top pins. But the real question is why does my pin kit include .010 top pins. they're so small they can fit in the sheer line and slip out reeking havoc and none of the pin charts call for this pin. they're seemingly useless yet they're in my kit.

On a better made lock, the plug fits into the cylinder with less of a gap, allowing that master pin to be used. That being said, it is better, when possible, to use at least two steps when choosing master pins. That is because, as you stated, the pin slips out and causes havoc.

Good questions!

I deal medeco locks and assa and even those dont really play nice with them small top pins. But I bet yyour right though. I have seen some tight fitting plugs before.
