Can picklock damage the lock?

Hi all

I've found an answer within the FAQ page but it was related to the scrubbing technique only..

I'd like to know that in general

does a correct lockpicking action damage the lock?

Scrubbing or "pin by pin" picking shouldnt damage/brake the lock if done correctly.. Both styles leave small microscopic marks in the pins and on the plug.. I remember reading somewhere that some car manufacturer(s) use some weird locks that can brake v e r y easily.. not sure if thats true thought..

edit button I forgot to say that u can "brake" a tubular lock if u pull the tubular pick out of the lock before turning it to the end..

the problem for me (I'm italian) is to recognize every kind of lock

u've mentioned different kinds of locks and it'd be veeeery helpful for me you u could link me some images, or sites, that show pictures of locks so I can recognize 'em

I've noticed that european locks are different from american ones so if you could drive me to them I would be very grateful

Normal european pin tumbler locks are generaly not so much different than americans.. The only thing thats different is that european models have usualy more restricted keyway (Abus for example has very restricted keyways on the newer models).. I will try to find some info/pics when I get home but in the mean time u should search from google for the pictures.. Try searching with phrases like "keyway+lock" "restricted+keyway" "european+cylinder" etc..

Lol, are you trying to say that Italians in general cant recognize locks good? Or you just stating that your Italian?
Im Italian and i have no problem recognizing locks.

As for the 'correct' way of picking locks..what u mean by that? Do you mean correctly preforming a certain technique to get the lock picked? Im not saying your wrong or anything, i was just confused as to what you meant...

i think hes informing us that the locks would be european

and with lockpicking there is a right way and a wrong way


for example: i've never picked a lock and it is likely because i'm doing it the wrong way
