Aussie vs US locksmiths..?

Pull up a chair, grab a cold one, and talk about life as a locksmith. Trade stories of good and bad customers, general work day frustrations, any fun projects you worked on recently, or anything else you want to chat about with fellow locksmiths.

Aussie vs US locksmiths..?

Postby boogietoot » 12 Oct 2013 5:59

Hey. I'm a first year apprentice locksmith on qld, Australia. At my second block of tafe. In aus an apprenticeship in locksmithibg is 3.5 - 4 years and 8 weeks a year of tafe (tafe is like a school just for apprentices for all differnt trades). I have seen a lot of posts on these forums about schlage, mark, and kwikset locks. Schlage and kwikset in Aus are few and far and I havnt met any one that would promote either product. And never have heard of mark. The big ones in aus are Lockwood, whitco, Kaba, and Brava. I see Yale here and there also. Any ways, are any of these brands pushed in the states?

Also. What's involved in apprenticeships in US?

The answer to that question depends greatly on which US state you are located in and which trade you are seeking an apprenticeship in... What the licensing requirements are for each trade vary from state to state -- some states require no special licensing for locksmiths and others heavily regulate the trade...

I has been a few years so my information may not currently be 100% accurate.
My apprenticeship was sponsored by the California Locksmiths Association (CLA) with support from several manufacturers and distributors.

Weekly classes 4 hours with a few weeks off at Christmas and Spring
40 + hours a week employment / training at no cost to the shop.
Mandatory attendance at local trade shows and classes.
Quarterly tests to show proficiency in class material and current subjects.

Graduation with a CLA Master Certificate after 2 years. ( no guarantee of continued employment )
