Custom Bogota w/Ebony Handle

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Custom Bogota w/Ebony Handle

Postby ChonkyTonks » 8 Feb 2011 12:47

Hey all,

Here is the latest pick commissioned by LSA. He wanted a bogota with an ebony handle. This one was a wee to finish due to the curves. I really dig the finished product, though. Let me know what you think.

It looks like I need to do a little more sanding to get those shiny spots. :/

Also, for anyone interested in getting a custom pick (or picks), I currently have a queue of about a month. If you are interested, please go to the following URL and submit an order:

Mods: Please let me know if I am violating the rules here.

Thanks,
ChonkyTonks

The design is interesting, albeit not my cup of tea, but you need to think about grain direction a lot more when working with wood. The curls either end of your pick are living on borrowed time, as they have thin sections of short grain which will snap off with very little force, unless you've run the metal core through the full length and width of the handle.

I am glad that you bring up this point. I make all of my picks with a full tang, so that design elements like you see on this pick will remain intact. I would never attempt something of this style otherwise.

A functional work of art. ...looks like something a rennaissance locksmith would've used. Less the scrimshaw. as i said a true functional work of art.

Is it possible to find any good dark wood for making pick handles out of in the US in nature?
