Need Help: M1 Space and Depths

Postby ckc123 » 1 Dec 2013 18:22

Ok.. I'm confused.

I'm trying to find the space and depth specs for the common Master M1 key.. you'd think that would be easy, but what I have found does not match a much of M1 keys that I have (have 10 various loose keys)

even checking the Master website (Technical Manual). I can't find one that matches both the depths, and the spaces.

The Shoulder to first cut is ~ .213 (.218 is on the Master spec)
The cut to cut space looks like 0.132 (.125 does not match up when you get to space 3 &4)
but there is nothing on the master chart that has both of those...

I've check the HPC space and DEpth for "Master Small Pin" which seems to be for the M2, but does not list the M1

Shoulder to first cut .187

Pin spacing .125

Depth of cuts:

0 =.272"
1 =.2565"
2 =.241"
3 =.2255"
4 =.210"
5 =.1945"
6 =.179"
7 =.1635"

Those are depths of cut for the current generation for Master padlocks. They changed a while back, and were slightly different.

Would have to check pin measurements - have them written down, but not right next to me.

Thanks Gordon..

I have 1-2 that it seems to line up with, but a lot that are different. the shoulder seems to be longer then .187.
(and the depths are different as well)..

I suspect they are the "old" version.. any way to find out what they are?

A Master #19 padlock has shoulder to first cut of .218" and pin to pin spacing of .156". Does that sound more like it?

That would give root depths of:

0 = .372"
1 = .347"
2 = .322"
3 = .297"
4 = .272"
5 = .247"
6 = .220"
7 = .197"

How do those measurements work for you?

Doesn't match either.. it's wierd..

one thing I did notice.. the ones that don't match are NOT original cut keys (with codes) .. (the two that do match are factory keys with codes on them).

I wonder, if they were copied from another key which was not from a master lock (but used the same M1 blank profile.

I know a few are for a "light box" at out local soccer field (which are the ones I need to make copies of for the coaches, hence my quest to find the code to cut it on my machine )

M1 is Master Large Pin. Master Small Pin is just for the #7.

Spacing.

.187 .312 .437 .562

I see Gwiens has already posted the correct depths as well.
