Believe it or not I bought a new Kwikset deadbolt from the hardware store and it had 2 spool pins inside. Does the cylinder look like this? Have you picked spools before?
That is a Smart Key, not a pin tumbler mechanism... Probably just the wrong pic here, but watch out for the slot to the left of the keyway for the change tool. -Brian

Oops you are correct the lock in the picture is a smart key. The Kwikset I purchased looks identical to the pictured lock except it does not have the hole for the key change tool.

That is a Kwikset SmartKey and it is difficult to pick. It doesn't have pins.

Correct, this was established above. It has wafers and a sidebar instead of pins. I did a quick google for a pic of my kwikset and did not notice the changekey hole before posting. My mistake

Sorry. I did not see the second page when I posted. Kwikset's have spools off the shelf sometimes? That is interesting. I'll have to try to get one.

Strangely the Kwikset I bought had 2 spools brand new off the shelf from home depot. It looks identical to the one in the picture minus the smart key hole. Same finish and everything. I was very surprised to find the spools because I was always under the assumption that Kwiksets never used spools from the factory. Next time I'm in home depot I'll try and get a SKU or item number for it.

Mini picks are fun once you have gotten good at picking. They are not however good for starting out in picking.
Their small handles make them a bit akward to use.

I highly recommend the Southord Pxs-14 set, I got it for myself and there are more picks than you'll need as a beginner.

For the record, I'm a newbie starting out with the exact same set. I found that it was really hard to comfortably lever on the pins with the tiny little tools in it. So I took a stick of wood, sawed a slot in it, and superglued the hook pick in. A little sandpaper, and BAM a serviceable tool to play with. The only problem I'm finding is because they're so thin, the root of the pick is pretty wide and gets in the way sometimes. Which is why I just ordered myself the Tuxedo set from Sparrows. They're out for delivery, can't wait!

manskirtbrew if you take what you are using for a tension tool out of the bottom and rotate it 180 degrees & place it in the top of the keyhole You will find plenty of room in that keyhole That is a good fast fix for the skinny pick with your pencil, Man

I think it's all about experience like Squelchtone said...I have a Southord set and it is better than anything I have machined but it is still all about time and feel. One you have time invested and feel developed, I believe you be able to use any type of tool.

If you look in the picture you can see the tension tool is keeping the pick from being lowered enough to pick the lock Also it is bad form to let the pick touch the tension wrench but if it works for you & all I guess everyone hasta find their own way
