Changing code on Gate and Door Combo Locks

Postby scidoc » 14 Mar 2014 20:11

I have just moved into a home and need to change the combination of a gate and a door. I have images of both.
I have emailed one gate vendor but would like to figure these out. My progress with picking tools with ordinary
tumbler locks has been slow and frustrating even with the MIT info. I am an admirer of Richatd Feynman and this is my first post. Sorry if I'm in the wrong place. Is it possible to post images? The combination group did not allow me access.

You can post pictures by uploading them to photobucket or imgur and you copy the direct link and paste it between image tags.

Code: Select all

"How does it work?"
"Only one way to find out. Open it up!"

Also post your location as different countries use different manufacturers of locking devices.

oh geez, another scientist/engineer :-O

call a locksmith and have them change your combinations for you before you end up doing something where replacing the locks ends up being the cheaper option...

I really can not fathom why people buy houses for hundreds of thousands up to millions of dollars and won't hire a locksmith for a couple hundred bucks to secure their new home from anyone who previously had access... That pattern of behavior has no logic to it and can't be rationalized no matter how hard/well you try...

I'm more interested in what Richard Feynman has to do with this.

at Los Alamos, he was known to enjoy safecracking as a hobby. This is very well documented ;-)

The real mechanical problem with your desire is that you don't have any of the
parts (pin kit or key blanks) you would need to rekey these yourself. Although
if you had a keyblank that fit your lock & a file it would be technically possible
at least for you to rekey by swapping a couple of the bottom pins around in the
lock. I doubt that any self-respecting locksmith would sell you a blank key tho...

However the home improvement stores used to sell a "do it yourself" kit. It came
with one pair of cut keys & the bottom pins needed to rekey several locks, along
with a plastic follower (you could prolly use a AA battery instead of the follower)

???? I am of an engineering background......... Are you saying I might overthink things at times?????

I am offended as I really really really thought about what you said and I resemble your comment!!! :)
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!
