Where to buy Metal Windshield Wiper Inserts in bulk?

Postby Guest3123 » 23 Apr 2014 19:58

I'm going to be making very nice quality lock picks (Hooks & Rakes) May 2014.

Here's my shopping list so far.

** http://www.OnlineMetals.com/ **
01. (12x) 1095 Full Hard 0.025" Feeler Guage - $041.42
02. Titanium Grade 2, 1/8" x 1' - Rod (x3) $010.41
03. Cutting Fee $001.50
TOTAL ---------------------------------------------> $053.33
Shipping ------------------------------------------> $026.25
OnlineMetal.com TOTAL ------------------------> $079.58

** http://USAKnifeMaker.com **
01. G10 - BLUE - 1/8" x 1.5" x 6" (x3) $017.82
Shipping ------------------------------------------> $013.05
USAKnifeMaker.com TOTAL --------------------> $030.87

** Local Hardware Store **
01. LOCTITE Metal/Concrete 2 part Epoxy --> $008.00

** Lowes **
01. Very Nice Wood -----------------------------> $020-$30 (No Knots, Different section of Lowes)
02. Dremel EZ456B Cut-Off Wheel 12pk. ----> $021.00
03. 600 Grit Sanding paper 5x -----------------> $006.00
04. 1200 Grit Sanding Paper 5x ---------------> $006.00
05. 3M Safety Glasses ---------------------------> $010.00
06. Dremel Wood Cutting Wheel EZ544 -------> $016.00

I have a Dremel with the $35 160 piece kit with sanding drums, paper, cut off wheels, etc. etc. Brand New, just bougt it like a few weeks ago.

Here are some of the locks I'm ordering too..

Just a couple..

01. ABUS 55/40 Solid Brass Padlock
02. ABUS 74/40 Safty Lockout ORANGE
03. ABUS 45/40 Laminated Steel Padlock
04. ABUS 85/40 Solid Brass Padlock
05. ABUS 82/70B Solid Brass Padlock
06. ABUS 80Ti/45 TITALIUM
06. Brinks 50mm Brass Padlock
07. Brinks Laminated Steel Boron Shackle Padlock
08. Yale Security Yh Yh Single-Cylinder Deadbolt $46.00
09. Schlage Double cylinder Deadbolt $50.00

Going to make a wooden 2 x 6 practice thing, with eye hooks or bolts, and deadbolts in it. with all these locks in and on it. Not going to have any keys... if you want to take off a padlock you need to pick it to take it off, and if you want to put it back on this thing, you need to SPP it to put it back on. etc. etc.

So.. I don't know where to buy Metal Windshield Wiper Inserts.. Cars & Trucks don't have metal windshield wiper inserts anymore.. The older cars like my 1972 Chevrolet Nova does, but I don't know where to buy them in bulk.. I could go to the Easy Pull here in PA, but that's a pain in the ass. Can't I buy them in bulk online or something?

If anyone could help me, that'd be really cool. I have most of everything else figured out..

I also understand that I could make the tension wrenches out of Allen Hex Wrenches...

I also am aware that Peterson Pry Bar & Peterson Pry Bar Lite are 1.27mm (0.050") & 1.016mm (0.040") thick.. But I want to make a crap load of tension wrenches.. Of my own design.. This little project I've been putting off for a little while.. I wanna do stuff with my hands, and get busy doing stuff.. I'm really passionate about Picking Locks or Lock Picking. I've picked all the locks I have, all the deadbolts in the house, etc. etc. etc. I'm ready to go to the next level. Hopefully this little project will keep me busy for quite a while..

Sure cars still have them. Most cars' wiper blades have two springs per wiper blade.

Sounds to me like you are looking for spring steel, which is what those shims are made from. Many machine shop tool sellers have a selection of spring steel in different thicknesses & widths. I know esp and hpc both sell small selections, or I'm sure 800 use-enco can help you if you know the exact sizes you want. I think you could really save tho on those prices, $50 for a schlage double deadbolt? Why not get a used one for less? Same lock either way, just less pretty.

So I'll probably have to get another pack of 1095 feeler guage then.. That's another $42.

I'll probably have to take off one of the deadbolts I wanna get. I'll probably take off the Schlage, since I've built a prop with a Schlage in it already. Gonna have to get a torch too, to bend the metal.

A propane torch is the cheapest part of this project

How many wiper inserts are you looking for? Am a mechanic, and get a lot of them all the time.

For the wipers, just go to any auto parts store and ask for some old ones. They will usually install the ones they sell for customers and then toss the old ones. I've seen buckets full of them sitting out in front of the stores. If they don't have them on hand, ask them to save them for you for a week, you'll probably get more than you want. Bring them some donuts for their trouble and your set.

As for the picks, did you consider using stainless feeler gauge? I don't make a lot of my tools but when I do put in the time and effort, I use the best materials I can get so that they last as long as possible. You can get 301 full hard stainless feeler gauge - it's probably more expensive and harder to work with but may be a better choice.

If you just want the old metal wiper inserts, visit your local big box auto parts store any day that it is raining and dig through their parking lot trash cans. Most folks only replace their wipers when it's raining (that's when they remember they need new wipers) and the old ones just get tossed on the ground or in the parking lot can at the parts store.

You might look like a hobo digging though the trash cans, but who cares right?

We were moving the rest of the stuff from storage today, and when we were almost done taking the last load back to it's destination, his truck's breakline broke. He had to make a stop at Advanced Auto Parts. Anyways he ran into the store, while me and my friend stayed in the truck. I was looking out the window and one of the Advanced Auto parts guys was outside, he was changing someones wipper blades. I kept watching him, not really with any thoughts about metal windshield wiper blade inserts. I was like OMG !! He's changing the windshield wiper blades on that truck. I told my friend, hey I wonder what he is going to do with those after he's done with the old ones... I watched him, and kept watching. He heads to the front door of Advanced, and puts the old ones in.. Not in the trash by the door, but in the black rectangle recycling bin on the side of the garbage can.. I was like YES !!! YES !!! I wanna go see what they're made of.. I wanna see. I walk up to him and ask him.. Could I have some of those..? He's like sure, go ahead. I was like COOL ! Thanx man. I looked in the plastic recycle type bin, and WOW !! There were like 6 windshield wiper blades in there.. I don't know if they do that with all Advanced Auto parts, but this one had a nice little black plastic bin for windshield wiper blades.. turns out that you'll get mostly small ones, but I did get some long and thick ones. EPIC WIN.. I have right now on this couch like 14 of em ! Metal Inserts !! I only got like 2 thick ones, but hell. It's a really good day for me today. Welp.. I' guess I'll be able to do my lock picks after all May 2014. I'll also be doing a video series on how to make your own premium lock picks and tension wrenches. I will also throw in there how to make your own Lock Picking Station. How to make a wooden lock picking station with 3 deadbolts, and padlock picking station. Can't wait guys, it's gonna be Epic. Thanks for the help guys.

Glad to help. Also, don't discount the thinner ones. The thicker ones won't fit in tighter keyways. And you might be surprised at how little rise is needed for a short hook or a small diamond pick.

The bin was meant just for Windshield wiper blades. I made out like a bandit. :)

I'm probably gonna need to heat treat them though.. They might be spring steel but some of em seem, at least to me, a little flimsy. But I'll just try to make one right now, and see how it goes. just with the plyers, no torch to bend or heat treat them..

Those ones with the spikes that are bent up to hold the wiper in place are useless, as they bend incredibly easily. The other ones should be good for use. An easy test is to lightly bend the spring with a couple of fingers (put it under light tension to reverse the angle at which it is already bent), then release pressure. If the insert retains the bend, it is not suitable for picks. Decent springs will bend back to their original shape, and make great picks.
