I'm sure there would be a huge stack of paperwork required for disposal. Thanks atmtech3078

There have been a few models that were explosive right from the factory... here are two that used a modified relocker mechanism as a firing pin, and fired rounds of ammunition in order to break the tear gas vials: Not sure if this model was ever actually produced, but variants of smoke bombs were also patented, using some chemicals that I wouldn't want to be inhaling: US Patent 1,886,394.

The google patent search is cool. I didn't know about that. Thanks, atmtech3078

TSC emailed me a manual once that discussed the safe removal of these and explosive charges. Interesting stuff, bytheway, anyone seen TSC, lately?

I also haven't seen him for a while. Here, or on another forum he used to frequent. -Mike

Not exactly tear gas, but this sign is on a safe in for service at a local safe shop. May seem funny, until you realize the sign is legit. (They have been removed so the safe can be serviced). The safe belongs to a road construction company, and they use them to blast for the roads. Gordon
Just when you finally think you have learned it all, that is when you learn that you don't know anything yet.

The kind I removed used a firing pin. It was a bit weird removing them, but all in a days work.

the times i find them i dispose of them by breaking in a bucket of soapy water to dilute it and neutralize it. Customers always think they are cool to they are told how deadly they are 50+ years later

Did not know a chemical change resulted in explosive; that is scary. I removed a single vial from a large HHM records type safe a few months ago. The housing was mounted directly behind the lockpack; thus any action driving the spindle inward would break the vial.
