Need Help With an American Padlock Please

Postby vlvman » 27 Aug 2014 0:41

First, I am new to the forum and lock picking, been picking a couple weeks. I have been watching lots of utube videos. I have made some tension tools and picks. I am a journeyman electrician.

So I got bored with the locks I had, one wafer file cabinet lock, three Master padlocks a no1,3,4, an old American padlock, and a Schlage entry lock. I burrowed two padlocks to pratice on, a old Yale, and an American barrel lock.

I picked the American barrel padlock about ten times. The last time I picked it it must have been to control, the lock did not open and the core turned 180 degrees instead of the normal 90 degrees. Now the first pin is stuck and new pins have appeared in the bottom of the key way. The key will no longer go in the key way because the first pin is stuck. I do not think the core is removeable without destroying the lock.

Please help me get this burrowed lock back to normal operation. Below is a video of the lock I am having trouble with.

Thanks for any help.

If you spin the plug 180 degrees without a key in it, on many locks the driver pins will fall into the bottom of the keyway. You can hold them back with a tension wrench and continue turning the plug.

Here is a post with pictures.

Another warning about 180ing the plug... On many American locks, if you turn the key 180 degrees, the key pins can fall out of the plug through holes in the bottom of the shell. When you turn the plug back to the locked position, the driver pins can drop into the plug with the springs blocking the shear line. Then you be screwed!

I now understand that the pins I see in the bottom of the key way are the driver pins, thanks. If I depress all the driver pins in the bottom of the key way and turn the core it will turn a few degrees then it stops. Looking in the key way I can see the core is holding the driver pins down.

During this post I tapped the outside of the lock with another lock in several locations, I also used my pick to lift the drivers and key pins one at a time and the core finally turned for me. The lock is now back to normal. Yeah!!!!!!

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!
