"Picking" an embedded combination lock...

Postby daniel22747 » 29 Jan 2013 5:42

Many decaded ago when I was in junior high we had lockers that had combination locks that were part of the door itself. They were not padlocks, they were embedded so to speak.

I know there are many ways to "pick" a combination padlock; you can shim it, rip of the back and look through the hole, or even do an absurdly long math method. Never actually tried the math method.

What I would like to know is if there is a way an embedded combination lock can be "picked"? Obviously there are many better ways to by pass a locker door, such a crowbar etc. But can such a combination lock be "picked"?

Would perhaps the method you see in old movies using a doctors stethoscope work? Any ideas?

The only method I know to pick it is using the math method. But it think it only works on Master locks.
Never actually did it though. I have a combo padlock (IFAM) around in wich I'm going to try stuff.

You're talking about this kind of combination locks right? http://schoolweb.tdsb.on.ca/portals/bendale/images/Lockers.jpg
Go ahead, keep plugging away, picking on me! You will end up on bypass or with rigor mortise.

That's interesting.. the locks in your photo look like Dudley combination padlocks and someone used Photoshop to remove the chrome shackle from the first lock.

I think the experience the OP had would be with a Master 1630 like this:

Sometimes they're flush with the door, sometimes they're recessed.

Even though these are considered low security, I would prefer that since these are mainly used in high schools that we don't discuss them in great detail because anyone with Google can find this post and there are plenty of bored teenagers out there who many be tempted to get into someone's locker and steal an ipad or laptop. I think 10 years ago when people kept nothing but books and TI calculators it wouldnt be a big deal, but in this high tech society full of expensive electronics we all use every day, I'd rather not go in depth on how to crack these (unless you want to discuss them in the Advanced sub forum, which you're welcome to once you're a member there.)

Thanks,

You're right. Definite use of PS on the lock on the left and if you look at the next to the right, with the blue cap, you can see it is resting at an angle and glimpse the edge of the shackle. I wonder why anyone would do that?

So, I'm new to the forum. I had a friend forget his combination to this type of lock today. I've been picking for about one year. I carry the titanium set from Serepick around and have a cheap kit from Dyno. I mostly rake as opposed to single pin picking. I am law enforcement so this is a useful skill and a fun hobby.

I read the rules about the advanced forums, so I'm trying to be productive. I also understand why people aren't broadcasting big tips on this lock. My issue was my picks being too large. I also made a tension tool out of a paperclip to create more space, but no luck. If someone could message me some tips on this, I'd be very appreciative.
