Ace Hardware Disk Lock

Postby doublez » 12 Nov 2014 23:07

Hey everyone!

I recently picked up a Ace Hardware brand disk lock...
Looks like this, but with an ace logo on it :)

I've been having trouble with it though... I've heard you need a lot of tension, but I'm not sure how much exactly I need. I've also read that it has some security pins, any tips on beating those?

Thanks,

doublez

Hi,

Here's a video of wizwazzle picking one just to show you how he holds it and how much tension is used:

All I see is him doing magic for about 10 seconds and the lock popping open :(

He said that there are spool pins in it, but I'm not sure where to start with those... I know the idea behind getting past them (slowly release some tension, until it drops, then continue with the rest of the pins), but how can I tell what pins are spools and what ones aren't?

Haha, Squelchtone...

Yeah, I remember my first disk lock. It was the same look, but a Brinks instead of ACE.

It seemed like I would never get it open, but now, I can pick it almost by accident, so I gave it to my fiance to practice with. It's a lock that will give you weird feedback because of how it's made, and how you have to hold it.

Normally, they will just have one measly security pin in there. Let me link you to a fantastic video on how to detect and defeat spool pins, since this guy explains it with fancy visual aid and everything. Also check out his other videos, as he is a great teacher.

Once you master the feel, you will never again fear them. Still takes practice though. Never give up! Also, you never need any more tension than it takes to turn the key. Just keep your fingers off of the shackle if you can, so it will open once it's picked.
Chance favors the prepared mind.
