What did you pick today?

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Thanks (and nice work on the Mul-T-Lock). Funny you should mention the sidebar springs; I had rounded up most of the pins and springs within about 5 minutes, but it took an extra 10 to find the final sidebar spring (on the coffee table, tucked under a coaster, for the record).

A few days back at the TOOOL Boston meeting we took a look at 'Impressioning'. I got the hang by trying on a 3 pin practice lock, and then went straight into tackling this.

I didn't realize that someone had removed the ABUS core and replaced it with a standard Schlage core, so when I just happened to pick it up and try the SC4 blank in it I was happy as Larry

Took about 1 hr 20 mins to complete.

Awesome fun and really satisfying to wind up with a working key at the end of it all.

Hit up a vintage resale hardware store today looking for an SFIC mortise cylinder to pair with a Best exit lock that's detailed in another post. Struck gold (or brass, in this case) with this one; just had to pick the unbranded 7-pin E-keyway core out of it.

I snapped my i-core tensioner very soon after starting in on it (had bent the 90 improperly when I made it and cracked the metal; knew this would happen eventually). Wasn't thrilled about that, knowing that picking these to control without one isn't an easy task. Figured I'd try anyway though, and gave it a go with a Peterson Prybar and a Gem pick. Set mixed shearlines a few times & reset; after 15 minutes I was near giving up when the plug turned. First time I've picked a 7-pin SFIC to control, and the first time I've hit control without an i-core tensioner.

Picking SFIC's to control still drives me nuts... Nice work.

The 83 series is one of the only pin-tumbler Abus locks I know of without one of their usual keyways. The 83 series is specifically intended to be rekeyable and used as a poor-man's IC lock. The 300 core (Schlage keyway) is probably the most common one in retail channels (that I have seen). There is a rundown of factory cores here: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CEsQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.abus.com%2Fus%2Fcontent%2Fdownload%2F23715%2F633803%2Ffile%2F201401%2520-%252083%2520Brochure.pdf&ei=ObaAVKeMMYuYNrClgbAF&usg=AFQjCNHx791EAOZR7Xm5m4jYGcuMNd1d_Q&sig2=-tqKrBy7P_Dkqna3AgjJvQ&bvm=bv.80642063,d.eXY in the official brocure, and they offer a key-in-knob cylinder adapter (I think Security Snobs uses them to make their Abus Protec padlocks).

Got this 7-pin Arrow and another BEST SFIC impressioned last night. All the cuts are fairly shallow which saved me a good chunk of time.

Image

Next up I'm going to try and impression for the control key. From what I've been reading it's no small task but should be a good challenge, unlike this little girl skirt of a lock...

...my Kaba Micro arrived this morning from Germany. This was my first attempt at a dimple lock, and despite it's tiny size, I was disappointed at how easily it opened.

Finally got around to attempting my Schlage SecureKey today. This particular one was the front door lock of our house when we took posession; I quickly replaced it with something more stout. A good idea, since turned out to be an approximate 15-second pick. Took me longer to install the cylinder in a spare housing than it did to open the lock...

Impressive! I don't think I've actually seen anyone impression a SFIC. Looking forward to seeing you make a control key!

The first of my latest round of ebay purchases arrived and I just had to give this old US military American Lock a go right away. By morning I had it open and had some ideas for another American Lock (a cheap one) that had frustrated me for ages.
Image
These are the first American Lock padlocks I have been able to pick open. I just haven't been able to get the feel for their serrated pins for some reason.
This was a real confidence booster after weeks of trying to get back in form following a project that had me picking Kwiksets everyday for about one and a half months.

Hi.. For the one who dint see me yet..

Well im Bruno .. Quebec Canada .. im pretty new into this world .. about a week old :p

here is what i pick with ...
(my wrench is bad.. need to make new one)

Image

So hope i will remember you some souvenir !!!

Image

1- pretty easy..
2- cant fit a tool there yet (working on this)
3- dint really try this one.. will need to investigate on what type of tool is needed for those
4- i taught i could try the trick of pull on the hook turn left bla bla bla.. nop so cheap it wont work with this hack.. probably will need some sort of shim for those
5- this one is fun for me now.. much harder than number 1.. but still able to do it under 5 minutes (my wrench slip in this one.. more challenge i guess)
6- got it twice.. but with luck.. dint understand why and how.. so doesnt count to my eyes yet (but can easily open it with a small screw driver)
7- well this one i use a shim while picking.. so not totally done with it .. still in restoration

That it for this week.. have 10 new one coming by this week .. all with no keep.. :)

This lock is known as a wafer lock. It uses square wafers rather than pins. There is one set of wafers, no top and bottom like a pin and tumbler lock. These are for the most part less secure than pin and tumbler locks are are usually found on desk draws and low security applications.
