I'm on my phone at work so I can't really dig links for you, but I wouldn't worry about taking a course, personally. I'd say the first step before shelling out too much cash is to first grab a set of picks and to simply start picking. You might not even enjoy it, so just read up on the literature available online - there's a lot. Again, I wish I could post links, but either way, I'd recommend a Southord set for a beginner. If you want nice quality, look at Petersons or sparrows. Check out the link on the side bar for lockpickshop, as they support this board and have a wide variety of items.
