Best Padlock

Postby wyr2hs » 1 Nov 2004 16:49

I have a Best Pad lock that i am trying to pick. It is shaped a little weird. The bottom of the key hole is a little different, its wider. It has a hole below the key hole on the bottom. and holes on either side where the horse shoe part goes into the body and connects with the locking mechinism. Is there any special technique to pick these locks?

That depends on what model it is and If it takes ICs or not. Are you experienced with safety pins?

You say the keyway is wider..... wider than what? The hole on the bottom of the lock is for drainage. The holes in the body of the lock near where the SHACKLE enters the body are to attach a chain,to keep the lock from being misplaced while it is unlocked.

IC = Interchangable Core
Safety Pins = I think he meant "security pins"

the rest - I don't know.

I think horseshoe=shackle

As Chucklz says, the little holes you see are for drainage and are commonly called weep holes. You can read a thread about them here;

viewtopic.php?t=1589&highlight=weep

As for picking them, if it's an Interchangeable Core (IC) padlock, you'll likely find it WAY too hard to pick as a beginner or even early intermediate lock. The existence of multiple shear-lines associated with the control and operating sleeves means that you could be setting all the pins but some are set at one shearline and others set at the other - basically it feels like it should be picked but it won't turn. You can read about making a tool to place tension on just the control sleeve elsewhere on the site if you search for 'IC tension tool'. With one of these tools you can pick to the control sleeve and remove the core from the lock but this of course assumes you're talking about an Best IC padlock which we've yet to determine. See if you can post some pics....

Also, perhaps you could take a quick look at the terminology link before your next question? :)

I am pretty sure it has an IC. So how would i go about picking it? Are there any diagrams online that would show what they look like?
Also what are security pins?

in short security pins are shaped in a way to trick you into thinking the pins are set whereas infact they are infact not.

they the search function..... theres plenty of info on them....
