Curtis post clippers, models G and E

Postby cppdungeon » 15 Sep 2009 19:41

I have recently acquired two curtis post clippers, models G and E, as well as a slew of carriages. I was considering selling them, but then i realized that they were pretty cool. Turns out you can cut a lot of auto blanks with them. My questions are: How much do these go for? Does anyone make special carriages for them so they can cut KW, SC, or anything useful for common cylinders? What are the differences between G and E?

Mods: I was not sure where to post this, move if appropriate

the clipper you have i believe are called the #14 model and the newer ones are the #15 model..You can pickup parts for these on ebay time to time..These are out dated and replaced by many tools and are not worth to much..But...they still do work on older model cars..and they cut by code..But i have never seen any attachments for the #15 which i have but rarely use or the #14.

Thanks for the info! I thought it was something older than a #14, and as just called a post clipper. I'll have to make a video of this thing in action; It's pretty amazing. You just squeeze, and keys come out!

Could you take pictures from various angles to show how the thing works and what parts it has? Very nice looking tool I must say :)

I've not got a camera at the moment, but I might be able to get some decent shots within a week.

What is pictured is the Curtis Model 10, the only post model made. The wheel model is the Model 14, and the lever model is the Model 15.

What you have is a Curtis # 14 clipper... I have one myself. Though thay are "outdated" I have never found a key that I could not cut with mine. And we are talking I had to cut one for my fathers 2004 Corvette... so I know they will work for most any car, truck, van, house or padlock.

As far as pricing goes... check out Hawley Lock Supply at http://hawleylocksupply.com/Merchant2/ they have some there like yours for prices ranging from $99.95 to $149.95.

Nice find there... have fun with it

sorry I must correct myself... that appears to be a #10... not quite sure though... but it will still work for what I said.

I picked up a couple of these model 14 clippers with a bunch of accessories. Anyone have a manual uploaded for the model 14? If you ever made the video let me know as well. I cannot find much on the 14's. I would buy the Manual from Hawley, but I don't do automotive and figured I probably blew enough money on these as it is. Just be nice to see how these work... Thanks.

P.s. I have a a1 pak-a-punch, but it's a pia with accuracy... Be nice if these still work. Thanks!

I've got loads of these, their use in self-explanatory. The post is a very old model, then they added the wheel and then went to the #15.

I think I must have more Curtis stuff than Hawley, haven't used any of it for at least 15 years, most not even used! Cams, carriages, key machine parts etc. Hawley is a bit pricey and they don't offer much for your gear. True value is probably about half of what Hawley list things for.

I stock only a small amount of Post Clipper stuff. If I get a nice unit in, I'll list it on my website, but it's been a year since I've had such in stock. I think I still have a chromed Model C around here somewhere.

Most parts are interchangeable between the post and 14 clippers. I think you can upgrade the post clipper to a 14 just by changing the wheel post. I always find it amazing that a machine that is 70-80 years old, still works well.

I have a much bigger stocks of #14 clippers. As with a lot of Curtis equipment, I'll get 3-4 in, and maybe one will be good enough to sell. I bought from Curtis a lot of their #14 stuff when they were phasing it out 20+ years ago. Mostly I have A blocks and GMABCD carriages left. Plus other odds and ends I've gotten in from locksmiths and Curtis Rep's over the years.

The majority of stuff I sell is for the Model #15, of course.
