Tips For newbie pickers

Postby _Forest_Berry_ » 28 Mar 2015 10:48

So i have been picking a lot of locks since i first got my lockpicking set which is an C2010 slimline since i live in Europe. Here is a little guide i decided to write so that i could share my experiences and tips.
1 tip; Get an lock. In Eu i would recommend you to get this Image from an 1 Eur shop as they seam to be single pin. (which is great to practice on ).
2. tip; Calibrate yourself for the lock. put your pick in to the lock without the tension tool so that you can feel the various pins before anyone of them are setting. (some looks are real B***** as they can have very heavy tension springs so it will feel like every pin is setting. if you aren't calibrated).
3. tip; find the right tension tool for the job. F.eks in my kit for picking this lock i use the smallest tension tool, as it leaves me more room to move the pick, the only problem with this is that sometimes it can slide making you lose tension and sometimes even reset the lock
4. tip; trust me tension is key. i recommend following other peoples tips on tension until you manage to figure it out yourself.
5. tip; do not move the whole pick leaving it always parallel to the lock . you want to push the back down so that the tip of the pick goes up inside the lock (trust me this is a common mistake i have seen while trying to teach people to pick) if you want to get your pick under a pin you do the opposite you push the back up.
6. tip; hold the pick with your fingers not with your hand i like to hold my pick like this (will upload photo when i get my phone to work). its almost like holding an pencil just that the pick only needs to move up and down
7. tip; try picking the lock holding it upside down.
8. tip; pick a little bit every time you got time. you can f.eks try to bring your picks and your locks in places you would have normally used your phone to avoid boredom like i do in class (i focus better when i am fiddling with something)
9. tip; stay safe don't pick locks you don't own if you don't have the permission for it
10. tip; This forum is a great resource for learning and i would recommend you to make an account if you haven't done that already
Stay safe
picking your nose and picking a lock are 2 extremely different things only thing they got in common is the satisfaction :P

Hello,
Thanks for posting your suggestions for new pickers. I like to consider myself past the newbie stage, but I never grow tired of reviewing the basics because it helps me avoid developing bad habits as I progress and develop my skill.

i agree it is good to practice and review the basics even if you are long past that level. i once had an pentest which i almost failed miserably because i had forgot how to get access to a wifi network.
feel free to come with suggestions
