It all depends on the lock. Locks generally pick easier one direction due to the way the pins bind up. Because the bores in the cylinder cannot be perfectly aligned, you are ~theoretically~ reversing the binding order when you switch turning direction. My best guess is that the way you rake is simply hitting the normally hard-to-get pins first before getting to the normally easy ones, such as in a case of a low pin behind a high one. If the high one were to bind first, you would likely have a tough time raking the low one. But reversing to order, if the low pin bound first it would be rather simple to get the high one in front of it.
