Postby martinrdgz » 24 Apr 2015 15:11

Hi,
Can some one explain how to re-key this Schlage Interchangeable core below? I don't have a key for it? Please list me the tools I would need to buy in order to re-key it. I'm a newbie so please be specific when explaining. I want to be able to have a standard key and a control key for this core Thanks!

If you can please provide me with links of item's i would need to buy in order to re-key it.

is this for a fun weekend project to learn locks, or to make a functioning core you need to put into a working door?

It's probably just much easier to buy a core with keys and a control key on ebay for $29

I could rekey it in ~10 minutes
Pick or shim the cylinder open, dump the pins, grab a precut Schlage key and copy it onto a control blank. Rekey the cylinder and that's it.

minor details jeff, OP probably doesnt have shims, plug follower, precut keys, control blanks, pin kit, or experience.

Looks like you have a construction core.

At the very least you will need a plug follower or substitute, pin tweezers, blank in proper keyway, control key or make a control key and a file. You could just take it to a locksmith to rekey or make a key, it is about a 2 or 3 minute job either way.

You need a control key, some key blanks if you want to make copies, a file, some tweezers, a plug follower is a must or else you will have top pins and springs flying around all over the place (I speak form experience on that) to be honest it would be cheaper and quicker to take this to a locksmith to do unless your doing it for sport then have at it, I recommend reading The complete book of locks and locksmithing by bill phillips and CA Roper as of 4-24-15 it is around 29$ on amazon and is an invaluable treasure trove of information for beginner pickers and smiths.

Yes this is a hobby project that I want to learn. I don't want to take it to no locksmith I want to do it on my own. If I buy a blank control key can I shim it if I don't want to pick it? Also does any Schlage follower will work and are all control keys the same or which One is the rigjt one for me to buy can some one give me the name of key I need?

This honestly is not a beginner project for someone just starting out who doesn't know how locks work.. or how a control key works in this kind of lock..

As for a plug follower, you can use any plastic, wooden, or metal rod that is .500 inch diameter to use as a plug follower. You can use a wooden dowel, hi-lighter marker, a wooden spoon, etc.

The control key is cut to the same cuts as the regular key, but the tip is longer so that it can operate a pin that moves that pin sticking out of the side of the lock.

Here is a control key for a C section keyway, which I *think* is the keyway of your core: http://www.ebay.com/itm/371290647733

If you can take your lock apart you could use a file to file a blank key to match the pins in the plug and also file the control blank to match the pins in the plug and get working keys that way.

if you want to know for sure what blank to get, go to the hardware store with your core and ask them if you can try an SC4 blank into the lock and then buy that blank or go on ebay and buy some.

You can shim it with just a blank, no need to use a control key to shim the lock. This is basically like any other Schlage cylinder with the exception of the control pin and lug.

We're happy to help, but we can't totally hold your hand here all weekend, so you'll need to put some effort in and do some googling yourself as well.

SC1 is a 5 pin blank (this is the one *most* US residential deadbolts use)
SC4 is a 6 pin blank (more common on commercial/business door locks)

C is a section or keyway that Schlage uses, it is the shape or profile of your keyhole.

CE is another "section" or keyway that Schlage uses. They have many other keyway shapes as well, like this diagram shows:

Your IC core is probably 6 pins + the control pin, so the SC4 blank is what you need to cut or file a working key. I already linked the SC4 control key blank you need to buy on ebay, you wont find that sort of blank at the local hardware store. It's a bit longer to hit that control pin which is deepest inside the lock and operates that silver ring which operates that pin on the side of the cylinder.

are you following along ok so far?

Are you actually going to rekey the lock or just impression the key?

I bought me a pre-cut schlage key, so my plan is to re-key the core to the pre-cut key and then take the pre-cut key and duplicate it to a control key.

Ok I bought me a Schlage decoder, and a pre-cut Schlage key. Can I decode my pre-cut key and use that code to buy Schlage bottom pins to re-key my core that way? Here is a photo of the pins I'm planing on buying.
