hudson model 598B

Postby Jburgett2nd » 11 Aug 2015 23:45

I recently received this machine the hudson model 598b as a graduation gift from Ashworth College and I have to say I am quite impressed. It is higher quality than I thought it would be. It is 110v, and automatic I was expecting to get the Ilco mini mite which is manual. They sent it with 50 kw1 blanks, I have to say it does fine work cutting residential keys. As soon as I get some blanks I'd like to make some automotive keys in it to see if it works just as well with them. I was really surprised by the size it is huge and heavy and lack of noise, I was expecting it to sound like a furious angle grinder not the hum it gives out. Another feature I really like is the fact that it has a manual crank if you don't have power, for an SHTF fanatic like myself that is a major plus. I feel like this machine is going to give me a good start, I looked up the value and the hudson website claims the value is like 698$ I haven't been able to find any other listings but I can't imagine the school sending something with that kind of msrp unless they had a deal with the company. Any questions?

Never seen one in use at a locksmith shop. I am guessing it is a rebranded Wexing Chinese machine.

I'm pretty sure it is a rebranded DEFU machine, which is also Chinese. I am thinking about picking up one of their sidewnder machines.

Most key machines aren't made in China but if you are happy then no problem, I'm sure it is better than a mini-mite. Our machines are all made in the USA or Italy, but we are in business so can't afford machines that don't really perform whenever we need them. Down time costs too much. Of course not all machines made in the USA are that good. It depends on amount of use, type of use and speed requirements and other factors such as spares availability from local suppliers etc.

And offshore manufacturers have a tendency to either not to be able to supply replacement parts in a timely manner, or simply don't support a product after it's run, so many times what one is basically left with is an hunk of scrap.

I'm not saying I'm not going to upgrade, I'm just starting out right now and it's more than I could afford otherwise. I'm doing this by myself from the ground up with no one to invest in me so I have to buy supplies with my day job which is far from what I want to be doing.

Interesting, they are from Hudson, MA. they are located inside I-495 near Boston. I have seen esp brand keys before, wonder how wide spread they are or if they are just a New England regional thing.

Esp is national but not too popular and Hudson is national but mostly known for file cabinet locks.

It will work just fine. You could find a better used machine for about $200 though. I would avoid HPC Speedex and Ilco 045, they are not worth consideration if you will be cutting a lot of keys although for small volume they are OK. Rytan makes a good inexpensive machine, but if you want a solid reliable machine I have always liked Silca Bravos. They are bulletproof and fast and have good spares availability.

HPC recently merged with ESP/Hudson.

Hey Jim,

The machine you're talking about is actually a DEFU (or in Chinese, 德富) machine that has been rebranded. It's a decent machine, but is not very accurate. The automatic machines from Wenxing (or in Chinese, 文兴) look quite a bit different (Check out the Wenxing W288E; many locksmiths in HK use it :D )

I haven't had any issues yet with a key not working, I say yet because I know it is bound to happen but I've cut 100+ blanks now and I haven't received a complaint.
