Personally I don't see a need to split hairs with keys, locks are mechanical devices and are subject to wear with each and every operation, which in turn changes the tolerances, maybe for better, maybe for worse, add in the environmentals it must tolerate, moisture corrosion and dirt to name a few and then include the human factor, that being it might be operated by a leather gloved arm strong worker, to which the lock is an impediment to completing his job and that finely tuned device quickly becomes not much more than a chunk of brass that had better quickly pop open or get bolt cutted.
As such if the key opens the lock smoothly it's good to go, if not figure out why and correct the problem.
And then there's the cost factor, there is only so much profit in a key duplication and time is money.
