Need help opening my Gardall safe

Postby Romaz » 13 Sep 2015 11:44

Hello,

Picked up this safe from a renovation site a while back. They were going to scrap it but it was too heavy for them to move so they decided to just give it away to who ever could come and pick it up.
They also told me that there was no contents inside as it use to belong to one of their accountants.
I'm a total noob when it comes to safes, I only had a few of the "Staples" type sentry safes in the past but nothing of this caliber.

It's a nice looking safe and I want to try to get it open without damaging it up too much. Worse case scenario, I'm thinking of just grinding out the bottom and opening it through there, then re-filling it with concrete.

I already tried contacting Gardall, but they were of no help at all and the few safe/locksmith companies that I called want $900-$1500 to get her open. Two of them told me that it's "impossible" to manipulate this safe. The only way to open it is to drill it.

Here are some pictures that I took of the safe:

I've tried some of the test combinations like 50-25-50, 10-20-30 etc... With no luck.

To confirm, does this safe use the this the S&G 6730 lock?

If anyone can also give me some tips of what to try next, it would be much appreciated.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

We will try to be as helpful as we can, but please read the This Old Safe intro thread in case you have not yet seen it: http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=57348

There are a couple members here from Toronto, one is an actual safe technician, so maybe you and he can work out some sort of deal or he can provide tips or something without charging you the usual $700-$1000 to open a safe. But I wont speak for him, so I'm emailing him to stop by and look at your predicament.

That lock can absolutely be manipulated and it does look like an S&G. Normally yes, it would be a 6730 3 wheel, but you'd have to spin the dial and verify that you are picking up 3 wheels. Not sure what "locksmiths" you called or how you found them, but there's no need to drill that safe if someone knows what they're doing and if there is nothing wrong with the lock.

and just to recap, we don't discuss manipulation instructions in full detail here at this time.

Thanks for your feedback Squelchtone.

I completely understand about the security issues. Over the internet it's easy for the information to get into the wrong hands.
That's part of the reason Gardall wouldn't even talk with me in regards to tracking the original combo through the serial number nor would they provide a test combo list for me as I am not a licensed locksmith.

I found a few good manipulation/charting guides through google but for a noob like me, it's just too confusing.

In pic 4 (the bottom of the safe) there is a circular opening in the sheet metal where you see the concrete. Is this normal, or does it indicate that the safe was previously opened through there?

Hey, Thanks Squelch, been super busy but I still like checking in once in a while. Thanks for the nudge.

Let me answers as much as I can. Manipulation ? Impossible... pffft. I'll take that as a challenge.
Please do not grind anything. If I can't manipulate it , I will open it with very strategically placed hole. No more than a 1/4 inch. Much easier to fix then grinding and filling. I'd say It can be open non destructively though.

I've sent a PM with my number if you want me to come out and open it.

Also that hole was used by the factory to fill the safe with the fire resistant insulation.

Happy Spinning!

Call around, a locksmith can possibly call the factory and get the original combo for the safe,
that should cost around $50. It's rare that someone changes their safe combo (I find)
Those prices are so high, I would charge a fraction of that amount to drill your safe & likely
also repair it.

how did he go about it? how long did the job take? always curious on every job for different people what are there methods and how they decided to go about it.
i try as much as i can not to drill, if i cant manipulate it ill try auto dialing or using a high sensitive hearing scope.

congrats on the new gardal safe! thats a really nice little safe. differently something to keep around for a long time! Great score! :D :D :D
