Reinforce CamLock against Physical Entry

Postby LSD4me » 19 Oct 2015 23:45

Hey,

Not sure if this is the right forum for this but, I have a safe, that is secured by a camlock (Medeco)

The safe itself is made of thick steel, and would require a torch to get in...Or sitting there for a while with a grinder.

The only easy / fast way of entry that i can gather is to take a chisel againt the exposed camlock on the front.

Ive seen numerous videos of people putting a chisel against the base of the camlock and the safe door, and with a few whacks of a hammer, it falls to peices.

My camlock is a Medeco M3, and I would imagine it is made of high strength steel, but I sitll think a hardneded chisel may be able to do the job,

Anybody know of a good way of reinforcing the camlock visible to the front against a physical attack?

I was thinking something like those little metal tubes you see on the back of hotel TV's that guard the coax cable from being unscrewed....

Anyone have any ideas? THANKS!

If you mean against a punching attack, there are several types of 'double D' plates that would make punching more difficult,
and if you used a big washer as a body spacer, you could weld a slightly smaller washer over it, as long as the hole was big enough
to allow the key to turn, that would help grinder resistance. I'm a big fan of the grade 8 hardware that Ace hdwr stocks, it's very grinder resistant

There are collars made of hardened steel that the cam lock will fit into. The outside of the collar is tapered down to the face of the container so as to prevent anything being able to grip it or cut under the edge of the lock. However, to use one of these your lock may be too short. You would actually have to get a longer cam lock to make it work.
Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool. Wisdom is not just in determining how to do something, but also includes determining whether it should be done at all.

My idea covers the cam lock to some extent and protects it better

I disagree Raymond about my claim being a personal attack upon yourself. I actually stock the collars you suggested and I don't believe
they provide any type of protection against a face attack, against the cam lock in question. I still think my solution with a larger washer
or spacer and a smaller washer or spacer that are stacked one upon the other is a good solution against most any attack. Please save your
disturbing pm's for someone else, as I found your message a bit weird.
