new house old lock

Postby newhouse » 1 Nov 2015 23:08

Hey fellas,

I got myself a bit in a pickle. Bought my first house from a landlord with bad tennants. But before the tennants left they trashed the place and ofcourse lost all keys. So i tried to get the lock open myself. Tried standard lock picking tools, but i'm really bad at it. Then i tried to drill the lock. That didnt work either. The cylinder turns now, but the lock still doesnt disengage. During drilling the pins fell out.
What other things can i try myself before i need to admit defeat?
Thanks in advance.

I also uploaded some pictures. Maybe they tell the story better.

Hello and welcome to the forum! :)
You probably drilled away part of the actuator, which would explain why it won't unlock. Try and see if you can turn it with a screwdriver. I hope that you asked the landlord first, because if he had his own keys they sure won't work now.

Haha, thanks. Yes I asked the landlord/seller at the signing and he almost laughed that he didnt have the keys.
So, yeah. I tried with a screwdriver, but that was to turn the cylinder. I'll try with a smaller screwdriver.
What i was also thinking about, is using something like WD40 or Cola to loosen up the bolts so i can just take out the door entirely. Since the bolts are a bit stuck.
Its a full metal door.

There is a moment when it's better to stop. I think you're close to that point. Why don't you call a professional? His fee would be lower than replacing the whole door once ruined beyond repair.
Don't ask the first "aaa locksmith" that may be a scammer. Go to a couple local locksmith shops and ask for a quote there.

Cheers :)

Yeah, you might be right. I'll try these last few things and otherwise will throw in the towel.
And yeah, local known locksmiths are ofcourse better. Thanks.

Any pictures of the door/lock? It sounds like you are using a screw driver into the plug which wont do anything since its assumed you drilled to far in, take the plug completely out and use the screw driver to move the cam to retract the bolt.

If you have a mortise and can open the door then simply unscrew the 1 retaining screw and unscrew the mortise out.

If you have a rim cylinder installed then you can just drill out the 2 long retaining screws and the lock will pop out. There are also ways to torque the lock out but without knowing exactly what to do and with what tools you can damage things beyond repair.

If its a euro then snap it lol

I would have mentioned snapping, but I didn't know if that's advanced or not. If it was, it isn't anymore.

Thanks for all your worries and brainstorming. I finally got the door open and the lock out. I used penetrating oil to get the pins out of the doorhinges and got the door out. It is a quite heavy door though.

The lock is btw rusted. That's why I couldn't pick it and the cylinder wouldn't turn I assume. I love to thinker and will try to clean the lock. If not possible I will ofcourse just buy a new lock.

Cheers.
