When I first started impressioning I tried different approaches to marking ie., layout dye, ultra violet ink etc., But I soon realized that all you want in that keyway is a nice file prepped blank. Really, you don't want any gunk smeared in a lock. What you want to see is brass burnishing brass - or lack thereof. I've learned that all anyone really needs is a #4 pippin file, a proper magnifier, a space and depth chart, and lotttttttttttttts of practice. Just my opinion, of course.

Thought a picture of the very subtle marks the pins leave might be helpful. This was a brass blank, that had been prepared with a chalked, fine valrobe needle file, and the surface still looks rough under magnification.

My eyesight isnt the best. One thing ive found, thats easy picked up at junk shops, and boot sales, and works well when impressioning is an old camera lens.
You can pick up quality optics for arount the price of a pint of beer.
