JUNK lock found...or gold?

Postby Protec2 » 18 Feb 2016 21:41

So I got this lock at a moving/estate sale. I think it must have been buried for a while as it was just a lump of rust when I got it. A few days of electrolytic rust removal and this is how it looks now. I'm sure it will never function again but does anyone have interesting info on what it could be?
I told the lady I wanted ALL locks and keys she had... got a few master 77s, a fraim, corbin, illinois, master 1,2,and 3 and a yale with no key.. lots of miscellaneous keys also. Nothing that fits this lock though.

I have one or two of these in my shop, mine are in better shape and I made keys for them. I don't think they are worth a whole lot of $$$
if the shackle won't move at all it most likely won't open.

I believe your padlock is known as a 'Smokehouse' lock and possibly manufactured by Mallory, Wheeler & Co.

You can see a list of their padlocks, yours is missing the key eschuteon cover

I would guess either Sargent and company or William Wilcox. His never had a keyhole escutcheon.
Great resource here: http://www.antique-padlocks.com/smoke.htm

Looking at the antique locks website, I think this is a dead ringer for one who's manufacture has not been determined.
If there are any collectors on this site interested in these old locks, I'll send this one out for the cost of shipping if anyone is interested. I'm definitely not looking to start collecting another catagory of lock!
