Asking for Locks from local locksmith

Postby Matthais_31 » 11 Nov 2004 13:39

Hi

I was wondering how I should go about asking for locks? If I straight up state that I am learning to pick locks and was wondering if they had any I could have, I get the feeling they may think im a thief in the making. I could be wrong however...

What is the best approach to take? Sorry if this is a stupid question!

I have tried to do that exact thing. The locksmith actually kicked me out of her shop thinking I was a theif. Lies do help.

i got loads or lever and pin tumbler locks from pvc manufactures as they change loads of doors every day and and remove the wooden ones and skip them. i bet in one morning i got around 30 different locks some even with keys.

Hmm ok, well id rather not risk being labeled a theif in the making! Car boots sound like a good idea, as does the dump, ill keep my eyes out locks looking for a home.

how good can you already pick?

I went to the local locsmith and asked for a default 60mm cylinder.

my local locksmith sold me his default 5pin lock with spool pins. if you need something more secure, ask for something better (higher security) or another brand like a yale. say you'd like a <insert brand/type of lock> because you've heard they're good

if you don't want the dimple lock he comes up with, say you don't want it because you can't copy those keys everywhere

Yes, for the most part, if you go in and ask a locksmith for a practice picking lock, they probably will think you are a thief in the making (or are up to no good; especially if younger). When I first started picking, I did this and got quite a negative result. The previous advice is pretty good, I'd first find old locks anywhere you can. Try old ones first because the more worn out they are, the easier it is to pick (usually the pins set easier on the sheer line). If you're going to get new ones, try a master #3 or a kwikset dual cylinder.
