Hello everyone. I am interested in getting my license to become a locksmith and im curious what that entails. Im familiar with the application i need to fill oit but what about the background check? Im 31 years old and got in alot of trouble as a minor but as an adult ive been a law abiding citizen (with the exception of a DUI and suspended license ticket 7 years ago). My question is, would any of these things prevent me from becoming licensed in california? Im not exactly sure what they look for or if any crime of any sort will exclude me from getting licensed. Any advise will help. Thank you.

Nothing you did as a minor should be able to impact your adult life as a locksmith, so long as your driving record is currently clean

I could understand the driving record causing problems when trying to find a job but would it effect a background check for licensing?

It would certainly show up on any kind of a background check. No company wants an irresponsible loser driving their valuable vehicle
loaded with expensive inventory and tools. I'm sure if 7 years have passed since your last DUI you won't find it, but any auto insurance
business can tell you more about it than I can.

Anyway you can always become a self-employed locksmith, no matter what your record
is, unless you need a locksmith license in your state?

Yes i live in california and licensing is required. I just dont want to waste my time and money applying if my record as a juvenile is going to disqualify me. Unfortunately i just cant find any reliable onformation online regarding a juvenile record and getting licensed.

As I understand it, your juvie record is not supposed to have any effect upon your adulthood & is supposed to become
sealed when you reach adulthood, likely 21 years old. The computer is busting with all the background check sites, you
can always spend a few $$ and find out just what does show up, if you do your own background check...

Unless you where tried as an adult your juvenile record will not be in the NCIC, which is the most commonly used database for criminal records, that stated some states will retain juvenile convictions in a state database such as FCIC.

The upside of that is any competent attorney can get state records sealed and removed from a state crime database a whole lot easier then what it takes to get the FBI to do the same with an NCIC hit.

In my opinion your best bet would be to run your own background check through the State of California, it looks like the price is $32 for the state and $17 for the NCIC check which is not a lot to spend before you jump in with both feet.

I am not interested in becoming a licensed locksmith. It's just my hobby. The stroke I had keeps me from doing many things. I would be interested in buying a used DVD based program if someone has one they would want to sell. Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask that.

You might check E-Bay, lots of this type stuff gets sold on there
