Can rake can't spp

Postby Nightingangel » 5 Mar 2016 13:47

Hello, so I bought a lot of locks, no name no engraving but they look like master 140s. 4 of them I can spp and rake, 2 however, I can't spp but I can rake them. Looked with search function but couldn't find anything relating to it. Curious as to why or if its just because I suck. They all have the same dimensions and look exactly the same. Bought from a yardsale. The 2 I can't spp I can't even get them to false set, all are 6 pin locks, I believe from feel all standard pins but not sure, possibly one serated and maybe 1 or 2 spools. Not experienced enough to tell

Depends on what they are designed for apparently. I found a few old locks at work that were previous LOTO locks and the keys were gone. The bricks one I can take quickly; the masterlock I have yet to get (raking; rocking; or spp). I haven't given it but maybe three tries at around 10 mins each shot. It seems to have real sloppy tollerances, but the back pin will bind hard if I push it to where the cylinder stops turning.
Don't lose hope, these are the ones we learn from.
Or it's broke and we are wasting our time :p

IMO, Raking is very dependent on the bitting of the key. And typically a lack of security pins.

Take a look at the key and see if the bitting provides any clues.

I had one I could rake, but not SPP. It turned out that pin 1 is the first to bind, but it is very low cut and feels kind of dead, so I was constantly oversetting it. I could rake it (despite one spool pin) because I brushed pin 1 with the stem of the Bogota as I jiggled. Once I figured it out it yields to SPP.

I'm not saying that is the case for you, but look at the key for clues.

No key but i'll keep trying to spp it. Put it in my naughty pile, try it for a few minutes every day

First off, you don't suck...

I learned how to spp about 2 weeks ago. I was absentmindedly doing it whilst watching a YouTube video on the subject - not looking at the lock or paying real attention, just chilling an' fidgeting. As ya do! Well it popped open (the lock)!
I did read Mike (or Solomon's) Lock Picking Detail Overkill. Can't recommend this enough. I can pop locks by rocking or zipping in a few seconds but I have one cheap ass lock I still cannae open. (I'm Scottish)!

Take your time, enjoy the sport and you'll improve in your own time. No rush eh?!
