Trouble feeling counter rotation with Defiant spools

Postby Chrisfields » 16 Jun 2016 3:05

I've been picking Kwikset locks with spools for about 5 days now and have no problem locating and feeling/seeing the counter rotation. I picked up a Defiant lock and have been having trouble feeling/seeing any counter rotation. When I push the spool up it feel like I've hit a wall and that's it. I've been reading the forums and have read and tried a couple of tips, however, have been unsuccessful. Here is what I've tried so far

1. Stripping the lock down to 2 pins.
2. Using light/no tension while pushing up on the pin with the spool driver. Even with no tension I "hit the wall" then nothing.
3. Marking the pick to make sure I am directly under the pin.
4. Tried various bottom pin sizes to make sure I wasn't accidentally oversetting anything.

What do you mean "hit the wall"? 2 Kwikset that have spools and I picked them a dozen times and and never know that there were 2 spools. Bad tolerances and very light spools.
Success is the ability to go from one failure to the next without any loss of enthusiasm

When I say hit the wall I mean the pin stops and doesn't want to go any further. It is like I'm pushing it against a wall.

You are most likely oversetting a pin or you haven't fully set a security pin. Which defiant lock are you working on? Some of those that you get from the box stores have a couple of spools and if you aren't used to them they will trip you up.

Often when learning you think all locks feel the same until you start picking something else and realize each lock is different so the attack has to be different. Picking is the art of adaptation. You have to feel that lock out like its own thing and work through it. Reset the lock and try the pins from a different order. Overset a couple on purpose so you can see what the rest of the lock feels like if you do. Look at the key and do this with the longest key pins. You will eventually get the right combo and it starts to reveal itself to you.
