H&H Jacknife replacement picks

hey! does anyone know if the southord replacement picks will fit in the H&H chinese knock off?

I don't know, but I'd bet if you called or e-mailed SouthOrd, they would have the answer. They have great customer service.

I have an H&H jackknife set and it appears that the pivot pin is pressed in. From the look of things, it's the same dimensions and shape as the Southord and I don't see why the replacements wouldn't fit.
What I'll do is I will go ahead and punch the pivot pin out of mine and see if it will actually go back in the way it should.
That's the only concern I have with disassembling this thing.
I'll update with my findings as soon as I can. If it does work, I'll get some Southord picks to put in here because the ones it came with are awfully flimsy.

I have my H&H jackknife disassembled. It will go back together. It's a simple compression pin in there. I have the whole set of southord inserts on order. When they come in I will photograph the entire process for tutorial purposes!

Just got the Southord jackknife inserts today and finished this project. So taking it apart is as easy as pounding an alan wrench through the pivot pin. Don't lose the pin like I did, took me 5 minutes crawling on the floor to find it haha.

HH disassembled. Easy enough!


The Southord picks are a hair thicker, so I had to make the frame a little wider.


After trying to seat the Southord picks into the frame I found out the inner diameter of the Southord inserts are exactly the same as the outer diameter of the pivot pin. No fit!
So I took a 9/64" drill bit and put the Southord picks in the vise. !!; CLAMP the ends with pliers as you drill so you don't bend them all up!


File down the burrs from drilling, make sure they fit in there snug but not too snug. Tap the pivot pin back in gently and you're all set!


So that's finished. High quality picks in a cheap jackknife pick frame.

thank you for this. So, at the end of the day do you think it's worth it to swap out the picks? Mine finally just came in the mail. I filed down that deep hook to a medium. That s rake is the most absurd angle it actually made me laugh when I saw it. The L rake, deforest and half diamond are not too bad.

Honestly, the price of the HH pick I got was $11 and some shipping. Basically $15. The cost of the southord inserts was $12 and some shipping which was about $15. The work that went into it was minimal but still time spent.

Probably more cost effective to just buy the Southord jackknife. Unless you like working on things, them it's worth the experience.

The picks that come in the HH jackknife are kind of a joke but they do work in a pinch, and aren't horrible.
