Question about biting depths...

Postby cacciato » 25 Nov 2004 4:02

The Schlage depths are listed below:

SCHLAGE

SHOULDER TO FIRST CUT: .231''
CENTER TO CENTER: .156''

MACS: 7

ROOT BOTTOM MASTER
DEPTH PINS PINS
----- ------ ------
# 0 .335 .165
# 1 .320 .180
# 2 .305 .195 .030
# 3 .290 .210
# 4 .275 .225 .060
# 5 .260 .240
# 6 .245 .255 .090
# 7 .230 .270
# 8 .215 .285 .120
# 9 .200 .300

My question is, does this mean that there are more than 10 depths because of the master pins? Or, does the 10 depths listed take into account the master pins.

Thanks.

im no expert on schlage but with lock wood i think it is possible to have the smalles master (#2) on tope of the largest pin (#9) there fore becoming a #11

No decent system design would have a #2 master pin onto of a #9 bottom pin, the total stack height would collapse the spring in fairly short order, even with a small top pin.

In theory it could work, but practically speaking it would be dangerous. If you've ever looked at a #9 on a Schlage key you would quickly realize that there isn't much key left, and even going to a theoretical #10 would probably end up fracturing the key while attempting to make such a cut.

That said, there are lock systems that use #10, #11 and I even think perhaps #12, however, due to the key shape and warding this is made physically possible.

Ah, I see. So, like the #2 bottom and master pins could combine and essentially give a #4 bottom pin. Therefore, these are the only ten depths that one needs to cut, no funky combination, right?

Yeah... #9 is a really deep cut, there's no room for a deeper cut.

A #11 in a lockwood is imposible....(Im pretty sure) as it will be sitting ove the shear line in a non key in state and with the key in (= Imposible)

cacciato: Correct. For example...if the change key bitting is 42111 and the master is 82111, you pin the first chamber with a #4 bottom pin and a #4 master pin to allow both keys to work the lock.
