Security lock for drawers

Security lock for drawers

Postby tret78 » 4 Jun 2018 6:07

Hello. I have some questions regarding locks and bear with me since I have no knowledge of terminology. :)

I think someone broke into a three drawer piece of furniture I have that has a lock. I read online that it is quite easy to do and quick too.
This is it:

1. I would like to build in a new lock(is lock the term I'm looking for?)..
Something that can't be opened by using lock picking tools or a freakin paper clip in combo with something else.

Something that would need to be broken to get inside of. So I would know..
If i can get something for furniture that cant even be broken at all, even better

2. Do I need a lock with a cylinder? Do all have these? If not can i get one for furniture?
I read the best ones are with 15 or more steal pins and other pins that go in a sort of different opposite way(sorry, translating from another language and no EngIish terminology online) and under the right angle.

3. Is there a way to unscrew the outer part of the lock to get access? What kind of lock prevents that?
Do I need some 'protector' for the cylinder?

I need to make sure no part of the lock is visible, of course, apart from the key part.

Basically, what Im asking is if you could advise me on the best lock I could get for the drawer(pic above). I dont know if I can find all the locks where I live, but some general advice.

4. Also, does the drawer itself impose a security risk? Can something be done to it to get it out or sth that wouldn't damage it. Use your imagination :D Maybe inserting something in between the drawers?
The lock locks all three drawers. Is it possible for the new lock to do the same? are there any security risks there that could be exploited?

5. And, very important, do all locks have their own specific key?? No one could go and buy the same lock you have? The threat is from within my house.. I dont know how the makers could make different locks/keys for everyone, but.. Then again, a lot of people buy the same locks..

I would really appreciate your advice.
Thanks!

Hello,

In order to help you better we would need to see the back of your lock and how it attaches to the linkage of that particular cabinet as they are all different.

We also need to know the diameter of the hole the lock is inserted into and how thick the door is and how long your entire lock body is in order to suggest a suitable replacement.

Also, as this is a wooden office furniture cabinet, you should really not use it for any sort of "security storage" unless it is protecting something from a 5 year old child. If you have a teenager or an adult who is getting into it, they'll find a way to pry it open.

This is an example of a lock that paperclips and regular lock picks can't normally pick open, but it may or may not attach to your drawer lock linkage mechanism, so dont buy this yet, its just to show you some possible options: https://www.ebay.com/itm/172203033348

A hidden screw can work. wire/cable through the back, Or you could add a wireless magnetic contact/switch, and can send you a text as it happens. Can help if you choose the last option.

Thank you so much for your reply!!!

It seems that it would be hard to find a suiting lock and that it wouldn't be worth it.
I know they would find a way.

Is this a good place to ask for safe recommendations?

Should it be an electronic lock or is it easy to guess the combo after a gazillion tries?
An ordinary key lock, but which one?

I assume they cant break into it any other way but the lock, so what kind of lock am I looking for?
Id need a medium sized safe, but i also need to hide it somewhere. The drawer is the only place I can think of, but i dont know if it would fit or if it;d be too heavy.
It;s better they not see I have one.

It looks great for someone who can actually put it under the floor or somewhere. Ive no skills and no one to call.
And it is a bit small. Id like something, possibly 39cm length, 26cm width. Problem is, my notebook is around 38cm and the drawer almost 38 so the safe needs to be at least 39cm, but cant fit in drawer. Man..

Do all safes have a unique key even if it is the same model?

This lock cant be picked? Someone would have to break it to get in? And even that would be hard?

I have a couple of other questions I'd like to add.

Apart from the Q about every safe, even of the same model, having it's own key..

What should I ask the local sellers if we cant find anything online and would take too long to get?

I read getting both an electronic and key lock is good as you have to break into both?
How would I go on about asking for the specifics for the electronic and key lock to check if it's easily picked.

Anything else?

Sorry for all the questions.

Eternally grateful..
