Mechanism for resettable combination lock

Postby phorgan1 » 16 Jul 2019 12:27

In a jewelry making class a few years ago, an early project was to make a container and I thought it would be fun to make a combo lock for it. So I looked up how they worked online and made my own out of brass. Now I'm thinking about combination locks that let you reset the combination and am having a noted lack of imagination. How might their mechanisms work? I've searched and searched online and can't find any explanations or diagrams. Does anyone know a good site to get more information? I'm going to make a new lock since my metalworking skills are much better now, and maybe I want it to be resettable (other than the obvious way by attaching the wheels with set screws;)

Yes, the are patent drawings for all combo changeable locks. Either hand change, or key change. Look them up, the are quite a few mechanisms. The simplest one is a hand changeable combo with machine screws.

Don't forget to show us pictures of your old home made lock. And also the new one once it's done.

Cheers :)

you could buy a lock and take it apart, or watch a video or two on youtube as well:

+1 what femurat said about looking up patent diagrams.
